A Fayette County career center with a small adult division
Fayette Institute of Technology (FIT) is the career and technical center of Fayette County Schools, run by the Fayette County Board of Education. Its one building, on West Oyler Avenue in Oak Hill, is about 15 miles north of Beckley. High-school students from the county attend half-day sessions in trades, health, public safety and technology programs. FIT’s adult division is small: IPEDS counted 32 postsecondary students in 2024, all full-time. The two adult programs with IPEDS completers are Practical Nursing, with 17 completers in 2025 and 15 in 2024, and evening Electrical Technology, with 15 completers in 2025. A ten-month Adult HVAC course is now on the adult menu as well, and the adult education office offers high-school equivalency prep. The school’s website is now fitinfo.org.
Adult programs at FIT
All adult programs are taught at the Oak Hill building. FIT charges one price per program, and its cost table gives no year.

What the adult programs cover
Practical Nursing
FIT’s 2025-26 Practical Nursing student handbook describes a 1,300-clock-hour program that runs for 12 months, through the summer, in 450-hour enrollment periods. Classroom days run Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Clinical shifts run from about 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with some evenings or weekends, and students are scheduled for no more than 32 hours a week. The school arranges clinical placements at sites including Plateau Medical Center, Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley ARH, Summersville Regional Medical Center, Fayette Continuous Care and Genesis centers in Ansted and Hill Top. It prepares graduates for the NCLEX-PN.
Electrical Technology (evening)
The adult Electrical Technology program lasts one year and 1,080 hours, with classes on campus from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Students follow the NCCER and EDGE curricula, are entered on the NCCER National Registry and earn OSHA-10 General Industry. Under West Virginia Policy 2520.13, a graduate can sit for the state journeyman electrician exam after keeping a B average, having no more than six absences, completing NCCER Core and OSHA-10, passing two drug screens, reaching an entry-level cut score and receiving an instructor affidavit.
Adult HVAC
FIT describes Adult HVAC as a ten-month course. It prepares students for EPA 608 and R-410A refrigerant certification and for West Virginia’s HVAC Technician-in-Training licence, and it uses the NCCER and EDGE curricula. Students must be able to lift 50 pounds and climb ladders. We found no clock hours, class times or credential name for the course, and the course is not on FIT’s posted cost table. It is a separate course from the HVAC program that FIT teaches to high-school juniors and seniors, so ask the school for the details before applying.
Posted costs and how adults pay
FIT charges one price per program, with no in-district or out-of-state rates. Its posted cost table, which gives no year, lists $2,200 for Electrical Technology and $4,025 for Practical Nursing ($3,025 tuition, $500 books and $500 supplies), per FIT’s enrollment page. We found no 2026-27 prices, and no price is posted for Adult HVAC. The 2025-26 Practical Nursing handbook adds a $25 application fee, a $100 non-refundable seat deposit, a $40 parking permit and student liability insurance, and lets nursing tuition be paid in quarterly installments. FIT’s separate nursing program page still quotes older figures, so check the current total with the school.
FIT offers Pell grants but does not process federal student loans, according to its financial aid page. The same page says WIOA funding through WorkForce WV may cover up to $5,000 that Pell does not, and that most programs are approved for VA training. The West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services is another source of help.
FIT’s net price calculator dates from 2021, so treat its estimates with care.
Applying and class times
Adults apply through FIT’s financial aid advisor and take the TABE at a WorkForce WV career center or through FIT’s adult education office. They must agree to Fayette County Board of Education and FIT rules and pass a background check, at their own cost, within 30 days of the first class. A high-school diploma or equivalency credential is needed for federal aid, and places depend on space and prerequisites. Practical Nursing has its own admission steps: the ATI TEAS, an interview, two references, background and drug checks, a driver’s licence and the ability to lift 50 pounds. In October 2026 the enrollment page listed the Electrical and Practical Nursing application deadlines as “TBA”. Nursing runs by day, Electrical Technology in the evening.
Accreditation and results
FIT lists the Council on Occupational Education (COE) among its accrediting agencies and hosted a COE reaffirmation visit in May 2021; FIT appears in COE’s list in CHEA’s directory. FIT’s 2021-22 adult handbook said the adult education (equivalency prep) program is not COE-accredited.
The Practical Nursing program appears on the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses’ list of accredited schools, dated 22 October 2024.
Federal IPEDS data for 2024 show a 92% graduation rate within 150% of normal time (cohort year not stated) and 32 adult students, per Data USA. We found no published NCLEX-PN pass rate with a year or cohort, and no job-placement rates published by the school.
Before you enroll
- Adults cannot enroll in most of FIT’s programs. Automotive Technology, Carpentry, Collision Repair, Computer Aided Drafting, ProStart and the other high-school programs are for juniors and seniors. FIT’s 2025-26 school handbook lists Welding Technology and Health Science Education as open to adults too, and Business Information Technology to adults on a half-day basis, but none of the three is on the adult program list or the cost table, so ask whether a seat and a credential are available.
- We found no apprenticeship program run by FIT and no stand-alone adult nursing-assistant course.
- We found no published hours, class times or price for Adult HVAC, and IPEDS shows no HVAC completers for 2024 or 2025, so there are no results yet to judge it by.
- The posted prices carry no year, and federal aid is Pell grants only, with no federal loans, so plan how to cover any balance before the program starts.
- The adult education program prepares students for a high-school equivalency test; it is not career training.
One building in Oak Hill
All FIT classes, high-school and adult, meet at 300 West Oyler Avenue, Oak Hill, WV 25901 (phone 304.469.2911). There is no student housing, and no job-placement office is described; nursing students’ clinical placements are arranged by the school.
