Ocean Corporation

Ocean Corporation started training commercial divers in Houston, Texas, back in 1969. The Gulf of Mexico oil and gas industry needed qualified divers, and the school stepped in to meet that need. Just two years after opening, it became the first U.S. diving school to offer international certifications. This achievement meant students could work beyond American waters once they finished training.

Since then, more than 10,000 graduates have completed programs at Ocean Corporation. Employers in the diving and nondestructive testing fields know the school’s reputation. The training stays focused on what you need to get hired without adding unnecessary material. Each year, around 195 students enroll to begin careers in these specialized fields.

Degrees & Certifications

The school offers two certificate programs that each take 30 weeks to complete:

  • NDT Non-Destructive Testing and Inspection Training
  • Ultimate Diver Training

Class Schedules

Most of your time at Ocean Corporation involves hands-on training during regular daytime hours. The school does offer one hybrid option called OSHA Recognized First Aid, CPR, and AED Training. This course combines online lessons with in-person skill practice sessions. Classes for this program run most weekdays from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, so you have some evening flexibility.

The school recently introduced a New Hybrid NDT Training Option, though details are still being finalized. The main programs do not include externships as part of the curriculum. You can contact the school directly to get complete information about class schedules and program structure.

Is It a Good School?

Ocean Corporation holds accreditation from ACCSC, which validates the quality of its training programs. Beyond this accreditation, the school maintains approvals and affiliations with several industry-leading organizations.

Acceptance Rate

Reviews

Based on local Google reviews, The Ocean Corporation (TOC) is widely considered a specialized, life-changing trade school that provides high-quality, hands-on training and a direct path to high-demand careers like Commercial Diving (UDT) and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). However, it is also criticized for extremely high tuition costs, alleged misleading job placement salary expectations, and severe, inconsistent disciplinary actions that can result in immediate removal from the program.

Overall Score: 4.2/5 Stars

Common Praises

Exceptional Career Outcomes: Many graduates call it the “best decision” they ever made, crediting TOC with leading them to a “successful career” with “great pay and adventure.” Alumni from the 1980s and 90s report long, successful careers in the industry.

Knowledgeable and Dedicated Instructors: Instructors are often described as “very knowledgeable,” “welcoming,” and going “above and beyond to teach you” the skills needed to perform well in the field.

Hands-On, Practical Training: The school offers specialty training that is highly effective for students who thrive in a “hands on” work environment, providing more than enough resources to succeed.

Supportive Career Services: While acknowledging the student must put in the effort, reviewers state the college will help you find a job and provides strong career support after graduation.

Common Criticisms

High Cost and Financial Misrepresentation: Students call the school “overpriced” and express frustration that the tuition is “pretty pricey.” There are serious accusations that the school “sells you hard” on high starting salaries that do not match the reality of entry-level pay (reported as $\$13-\$15$ out the gate).

Severe, Inconsistent Disciplinary Actions: There are explicit, highly negative reports of entire classes being prevented from graduating at the last minute due to undisclosed academic integrity issues (like attendance fraud), with the school owner publicly defending the “highest standards of academic integrity” while students feel the process is unfair and results in them being unable to complete their education.

Program Disorganization and Unnecessary Classes: Some military veterans and others call the school “disorganized” and claim they are forced to take “worthless classes” (like welding or forklift driving) that employers do not value, artificially inflating the cost and classroom hours.

Inconsistent Instructor Quality: While most instructors are highly praised, one instructor was specifically singled out for being “rude” and “yelling at the students.”

Momentum

The Ocean Corporation maintains strong positive momentum among its successful graduates, who recognize the high-intensity, demanding nature of the program. However, this is significantly threatened by critical negative momentum surrounding its financial transparency and administrative integrity. The recent, public disputes over graduation requirements and the long-standing complaints about high cost and salary expectations suggest a disconnect between the school’s marketing and the student experience. Prospective students must enter the program fully prepared for the financial burden and the rigorous, inflexible demands of the curriculum.
