Scholarship Directory

Scholarships are free money for trade school that you don’t pay back. Many are made just for students in welding, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, construction, manufacturing and automotive programs.

This directory lists well-known national scholarships that trade school students can apply for, plus state options in Washington and California. We checked each one with the sponsor in October 2026. Amounts and deadlines change every year, so always confirm on the official site before you apply.

New to scholarships? Start with our Scholarships for Trade School guide. Then file the FAFSA, because many scholarships and all federal and state grants use it.

Scholarships in other states

Every state has scholarships for local students. Good places to look:

  • Your state’s aid agency. Our Financial Aid for Trade School page lists every state’s agency.
  • Your school’s financial aid office and its foundation.
  • Community foundations for your city or county.
  • Union locals, trade association chapters and local employers in the trade you’re studying.
  • Your local American Job Center, which may pay for training through WIOA. See Grants for Trade School.

Watch out for scholarship scams

Real scholarships never charge you to apply or to “guarantee” an award. Be careful with:

  • Fees to apply, to “hold” an award or to get a list of scholarships
  • Promises that you’ll win, or that you’ve won one you never applied for
  • Requests for your bank account, credit card or FSA ID
  • Pressure to act right away

Free search tools like Appily (formerly Cappex) and your school’s aid office are safer places to look. If something feels off, check with the sponsor directly or report it to the Federal Trade Commission.

Frequently asked questions

Are there scholarships just for trade school students?

Yes. Many sponsors, such as the Mike Rowe WORKS Foundation, AWS, PHCC, NAWIC and the SkillPointe Foundation, give scholarships only to students in skilled trade programs.

Can I get a scholarship for a short certificate program?

Often, yes. The Work Ethic, SkillPointe, DEWALT, AWS and SparkForce scholarships all accept certificate or short training programs. Some others, like SME and Coca-Cola, require a degree program.

Do I need to file the FAFSA to get a scholarship?

Not always, but some scholarships ask for it, and it’s required for federal and state grants. File it early. See our FAFSA guide.

Can I use more than one scholarship?

Yes. You can usually combine scholarships with grants, up to your school’s cost of attendance.

When should I apply?

Many trade scholarships close between December and May for the next school year. Some, like SkillPointe and the Work Ethic Scholarship, take applications in rounds through the year.

Do I have to pay a scholarship back?
