A public Florida college with three campuses in Broward County
Broward College is a public college in the Florida College System, governed by a local District Board of Trustees. It was established in 1959 as the Junior College of Broward County, opened to its first 701 students in 1960, and took its current name in 2008. The college says it has the third-largest enrollment in the Florida College System. Alongside the A.A. transfer degree it runs career programs: an aviation institute next to North Perry Airport, an automotive and marine center, police and corrections academies, and dental, imaging, therapy and emergency medical programs. Its RN degree is on Florida Board of Nursing probation for 2026-27. After a circuit judge ordered mediation, the board of trustees removed the college’s president under a settlement on 25 August 2026.

The college also teaches computer programming, web development, network systems, data analytics, information technology, graphic design, accounting, human resources, supply chain management, building construction, hospitality and early childhood education as A.S. degrees, several with shorter technical certificates, and marine engineering, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine technology. A Computed Tomography advanced certificate for registered radiologic technologists was added in 2025-26.
What the main programs cover
Nursing: Generic-RN and LPN-RN Transition
The Generic-RN A.S. is 75 credits over about 22 months. Nursing courses run in 8-week sessions (6 weeks in summer), and new students start in August, January or May; the part-time option is on hold. Applicants take the TEAS before applying and need a background check, a drug screen and an HHS/OIG clearance. The chemistry prerequisite, CHM1032, sits outside the program credits and may not be covered by federal aid. The LPN-RN Transition A.S. is for licensed Florida LPNs, who receive 10 articulated credits for a practical nursing certificate.
Dental assisting and dental hygiene at Central Campus
The Broward Dental Research Clinic is on Central Campus. Applicants to Dental Assisting first complete 6 general-education credits, then take a 50-credit, 12-month diploma that ends with Florida’s Expanded Functions and Dental Radiographer certificates. Dental Hygiene builds on that year: the 88-credit A.S. is a “1+1” program, one year of assisting followed by one of hygiene, and only 16 students start each August. Hygiene graduates take the National Board and the CDCA clinical exam before applying for a Florida licence.
Allied health degrees at North Campus
North Campus teaches five limited-access health degrees, each with its own supplemental application. Respiratory Care (76 credits) takes 30 students each August, and Vision Care Technology/Opticianry (72 credits) takes 25 each August, with a 29 June deadline. Physical Therapist Assistant (74 credits) and Diagnostic Medical Sonography (77 credits) admit through their own supplemental applications. Health Information Technology (70 credits) leads to the RHIT exam. Every one of these programs names a programmatic accreditor, from CAPTE to CAHIIM.
EMT, paramedic and the EMS degree
Emergency medical training starts with the 12-credit EMT diploma, which runs 14 weeks and 6 days in several cohorts at North and Central campuses. The Paramedic certificate is 42 credits over four semesters: students take the first two at North Campus and the last two at Central. The 73-credit Emergency Medical Services A.S. runs six semesters and includes the paramedic courses. For 2025 the paramedic program reported an 88.5% first-attempt NREMT pass rate and 85.2% positive placement.
Aviation maintenance and pilot training
The Emil Buehler Aviation Institute on South Campus sits next to North Perry Airport, where the college opened a 13,500 sq ft classroom and shop annex in January 2017. Aviation Maintenance prepares students for the FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificates: the traditional route is five semesters of about 400 hours each, and the Express route is 13 months, with the next cohort in spring 2027; the Express program is backed by a $908,000 Job Growth Grant. Pilot students take Professional Pilot Technology or the Aerospace Sciences bachelor’s.
Police and corrections academies
The Institute of Public Safety, in Buildings 21 and 22 on Central Campus, runs Broward College’s police and corrections academies. Both are vocational (PSAV) certificates rather than credit programs: Police Academy Basic Recruit Training and Corrections Officer Academy Basic Recruit Training. A third academy lets corrections officers cross over to Florida law enforcement. The institute also teaches the FDLE-certified Criminal Justice A.S. and Crime Scene Technology, as an A.S. or a shorter technician certificate.
Tuition and how students pay
Florida public colleges have no in-district rate, only resident and non-resident prices. Broward College publishes these rates as in effect since 2018-19:

For a Florida resident on campus, the $117.90 is $82.00 tuition plus fees for student activities, financial aid, capital improvement, library, parking and technology; online courses add a $9.00 distance-learning fee and drop the parking fee. A typical 60-credit associate degree at that rate comes to about $7,074 (our arithmetic), before books. Health programs add lab and exam fees, insurance, background checks and uniforms. IPEDS lists 2024-25 full-time tuition and fees of $2,830 a year for residents and $8,952 for non-residents.
The police and corrections academies are billed by the contact hour at separate rates, and the college’s tuition page and catalog give different figures, so confirm the current academy cost with the Institute of Public Safety.
Broward College takes federal financial aid (OPE ID 00150000). Its annual report says 3,299 students received Broward College Foundation scholarships in 2025-26.
Open admission, with limited-access health programs
Broward College is open admission. Health programs are limited access, with supplemental applications, point systems and fixed cohorts:
- Respiratory Care admits 30 students and Dental Hygiene 16, each August. Vision Care admits 25 each August, with a 29 June deadline. Radiography’s deadline is 29 March.
- Generic-RN nursing starts in August, January and May and requires the TEAS, a background check and a drug screen.
- EMT runs several cohorts. The 13-month Aviation Maintenance Express is taking expressions of interest for spring 2027. CNC Machinist is blended, with 8-week courses.
- General-education courses are offered at every site, but most technical programs are tied to one campus.
Accreditation and results
Broward College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges and Universities, the name SACSCOC took on 1 September 2026, to award associate and bachelor’s degrees (A.A., A.S., A.A.S., B.S. and B.A.S.). The accreditor reaffirmed the college in June 2024 without sanctions or follow-up requirements, after an October 2023 visit that found no areas of non-compliance; the next review is in 2034.
Program accreditors named by the college include ACEN (Nursing A.S., next review 2029), CCNE (RN-to-BSN), CODA (dental assisting and hygiene), JRCERT (radiography and radiation therapy), CAAHEP (sonography and paramedic), CoARC (respiratory care), CAPTE (physical therapist assistant), the Commission on Opticianry Accreditation, CAHIIM (health information technology) and the American Bar Association (paralegal).

The nursing pass rate has fallen from the 90–98% range the program recorded from 2012 to 2020. The college-wide graduation rate comes from a 2018 cohort, the newest IPEDS shows.
Before you enroll
- The Nursing A.S. is on Florida Board of Nursing probation for 2026-27, set in February 2026 after first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates of 75.58% (2024) and 73.43% (2025), well below national rates. The rate for the first two quarters of 2026 was 69.40%. ACEN accreditation continues. Ask how the latest cohorts are doing and what the college has changed before you apply.
- Atlantic, McFatter and Sheridan Technical Colleges belong to Broward County Public Schools, not Broward College. Practical nursing (LPN), hands-on culinary training and entry-level medical laboratory technician training are taught there, not at Broward College, which grants articulated credit for some of those programs.
- The Medical Laboratory Technology A.S. is not a way into the field. It is a completion degree for people who already hold an MLT certificate or diploma.
- Where you can study depends on the program. Most career programs are taught at one campus only: dental and radiography at Central, the allied health degrees at North, aviation and automotive at South. The Weston and Pines centers mainly offer general-education and classroom courses; Miramar West is a site shared with Florida International University.
- The real estate pre-licensing course listed under Broward College’s name is a non-credit, self-paced online course from a third-party catalog that ends in a certificate of completion, not a college credential.
Career help and internships
According to its 2025-26 annual report, Broward College placed 330 students in jobs and enrolled 1,044 in internship courses that year, and issued 900 loaner laptops. For the 2025 academic year it counted 1,374 career placement and experiential-learning opportunities, 560 Career Readiness soft-skill credentials and 1,817 employer engagements.

Reviewers most often praise caring, supportive professors, a diverse and welcoming student body, and low tuition with flexible schedules for working students. The most common complaints are administrative, registration and financial-aid problems, including conflicting information and delays; upper-level courses not offered at every campus; and a weak sense of campus community. The reviews are college-wide rather than about one program, and their dates are spread over recent months with no sign of a burst; we did not compare them with another review platform.
