Building Futures

What Is It Known For?

Building Futures operates as a non-profit organization with a nationally recognized pre-apprenticeship program. The program prepares low-income men and women for careers as registered apprentices in the building trades. Beyond training workers, Building Futures helps Rhode Island employers design and implement their own apprenticeship programs across different industries.

Each year, about 50 students enroll in the construction pre-apprenticeship program. These students come from diverse backgrounds, united by their desire to build careers in construction.

Degrees & Certifications

Building Futures offers specialized training programs:

  • Construction Pre-Apprenticeship
  • Apprentice Utilization Program
  • Women Building Rhode Island

The construction pre-apprenticeship runs for several weeks of intensive training. Graduates receive certificates that qualify them for direct entry into paid union apprenticeships. The Women Building Rhode Island program specifically supports women entering construction trades. Program lengths vary, but all focus on preparing participants for immediate employment.

Class Schedules

Building Futures focuses on full-time, hands-on, in-person training. The organization doesn’t offer evening or online classes because construction skills require physical practice with actual tools and materials. The pre-apprenticeship program runs intensively, simulating real construction worksites to prepare participants for jobsite conditions.

After completing pre-apprenticeship training, graduates move directly into paid union apprenticeships. These apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction. You earn while you learn, gaining experience on actual construction projects while attending related technical classes.

Is It a Good School?

Yes. Building Futures operates in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training (RI DLT). While specific accreditation information isn’t publicly available, this state partnership validates the program’s quality and alignment with industry needs.

Acceptance Rate

Building Futures RI’s pre-apprenticeship program maintains a competitive 11% acceptance rate. This selective process helps match committed candidates with limited training spots.

How Much Does Tuition Cost?

The construction pre-apprenticeship program charges no tuition. Participants attend free of charge. Some additional costs might arise for work boots, tools, or transportation. The organization doesn’t provide a net price calculator, so contact them directly to understand any out-of-pocket expenses you might face during training.
