BCIT: a county career high school with an adult education division
Burlington County Institute of Technology (BCIT) is a public county vocational-technical school district in New Jersey, with campuses in Westampton and Medford. It runs two separate things. Its four-year career majors, from culinary arts and criminal justice to video game design, belong to a public high school for students in grades 9-12, and adults cannot enroll in them. Adults enroll through BCIT Adult Education, a postsecondary division accredited by Middle States that offers evening trade courses in welding, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and automotive work, and longer health and cosmetology programs, including licensed practical nursing, medical assistant and cosmetology. All adult programs are taught in person; the catalog lists no online or hybrid programs.
Adult programs at BCIT, by campus
The 2026-27 Adult Education catalog lists about 40 courses in nursing and allied health, dental, animal care, automotive and diesel, building trades and apprenticeship, cosmetology, water and wastewater operation, and welding. The table shows the main ones. Prices are tuition only; books, uniforms, supplies and most state exam fees are extra, but the Dental Assisting price includes exam fees, PPE and supplies.

BCIT says Dental Assisting is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and is one of four CODA-accredited dental assisting programs in New Jersey. Its program page says it is not scheduled for the 2026-27 school year, so ask about the next start. The electrical and plumbing apprenticeship courses are classroom instruction for registered apprentices; BCIT does not place students in apprenticeships. Other adult courses include home health aide, ECG technician, clinical medical assistant, veterinary assisting, pet grooming, diesel, auto collision and water and wastewater operator courses.
What the main programs cover
Licensed Practical Nursing
The 1,540-hour program runs 11 months in the day cohort at Westampton, with about half the hours in the classroom and lab and half in clinical placements. The day cohort meets Monday to Friday and runs from 31 August 2026 to 30 July 2027; the evening section meets Monday to Thursday from 5:00 pm and next runs from January 2028 to July 2029, with registration opening in spring 2027. Applicants take the TEAS at BCIT and an interview, and need a physical and immunizations, a background check, a high-school transcript, BLS certification and health insurance.
Cosmetology
The 1,080-hour program is offered at both campuses in a day section (Monday to Thursday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm) or an evening section (3:30 to 9:30 pm). The course description cites New Jersey’s 1,000-hour requirement, and the program prepares students for State Board of Cosmetology licensure. A high-school diploma or GED is needed to sit the state exam. As with other adult courses, textbooks, uniforms, supplies and most state exam fees are extra unless the catalog says otherwise.
Medical Assistant Program
Taught only at Medford, the 720-hour program runs over two semesters, Monday to Thursday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, in four modules: administrative medical assisting, ECG, phlebotomy, and clinical medical assisting with a practicum. Each module ends with a National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification exam, and one attempt at each is included. Phlebotomy Technician (160 hours, including 100 clinical hours) and Clinical Medical Assistant with a 160-hour unpaid practicum are also offered as separate courses.
Certified Nurse Aide
The 90-hour course prepares students for New Jersey’s long-term-care nurse aide certification test and is listed at both campuses. It meets Monday to Thursday, either from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm or from 4:15 to 9:00 pm, and classes are capped at 10 students. A registration packet is due two weeks before the course starts, and New Jersey Department of Health fees for the test are extra. NJBIZ reported in June 2026 that BCIT had set up a clinical partnership with a home-health company for its CNA students.
Evening trade courses
Welding, HVAC, electrical trades, plumbing, carpentry, automotive, diesel and collision repair are taught to adults in the evening only, usually from 5:30 to 9:30 pm two or three nights a week. Most programs are two 180-hour courses taken in sequence, and BCIT issues no certificate for finishing only the first. Welding runs only at Medford, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and BCIT says it is aligned with Hobart Institute and AWS standards. The HVAC courses include the EPA certification test. Most other trade courses name no licence or industry certification.
Tuition and how adults pay
BCIT Adult Education publishes one price per course for 2026-27. The catalog shows no in-county, out-of-county or out-of-state rates, and we found no non-resident surcharge; the only reductions are the senior and alumni discounts below.

Federal student aid (FAFSA, school code 042856) is available only for Licensed Practical Nursing, Dental Assisting, Cosmetology and the Medical Assistant Program. Trade courses, CNA and other short courses are not eligible for federal aid; card payments carry a 3% fee. The Licensed Practical Nursing price excludes ATI software (about $2,350), books, equipment, uniforms and New Jersey Board of Nursing fees. BCIT offers no scholarships for incoming adult students, but gives a 15% discount to seniors aged 55 and over and 10% to BCIT high-school alumni, one per course, requested at registration. Veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Chapter 35 or Chapter 1606 can work with the school’s veterans coordinator; the catalog says some courses are VA-approved without listing them, so check the GI Bill Comparison Tool.
Open registration, with prerequisites for some programs
Adult Education is not selective in the way the high school is: adults register online for each course, and many programs admit students who meet their prerequisites. Registration must be complete before the start date, and late enrollment is not allowed. Licensed Practical Nursing requires the TEAS and an interview; Dental Assisting requires a high-school diploma, and the Cosmetology state exam a diploma or GED; CNA requires a packet two weeks ahead. NJBIZ reported in June 2026 that many adult programs have waiting lists, so apply early. Health programs mostly run in the daytime, with evening options for CNA, phlebotomy, ECG, clinical medical assistant and home health aide; trade courses are evening only.
Accreditation and results
The adult division is accredited by the Middle States Association Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS), effective 1 December 2018, with accreditation running until 1 December 2028. BCIT says its Dental Assisting program is CODA-accredited.

The nursing results come from small groups of first-time candidates, so one or two results move the rate a lot. We found no published job placement rates, and no pass rates for BCIT’s CNA, cosmetology, dental or NHA exams, in its catalog, consumer-information page or program pages.
Before you enroll
- The career majors on BCIT’s high-school pages, such as criminal justice, culinary arts, cyber security, graphic design and video game design, are not open to adults. Check the Adult Education catalog for what you can actually take.
- Federal aid covers only four programs. The evening trade courses and CNA are not eligible for federal aid; most 180-hour trade courses cost $3,100–$3,575 each, plus a $75 registration fee.
- Most evening trade courses name no licence or industry certification, and finishing only the first half of a two-course program earns no certificate. BCIT’s electrical and plumbing apprenticeship courses are classroom instruction for registered apprentices; BCIT does not place students in apprenticeships.
- Some programs are not starting soon: Dental Assisting is not scheduled for 2026-27, and the next evening practical nursing cohort starts in January 2028.
- Many courses are listed at both campuses, but the catalog does not say every section runs at both each term. Welding and the medical assistant programs are only at Medford, and practical nursing only at Westampton.
What students say
We found no review platform with at least 25 reviews of BCIT Adult Education. BCIT’s Niche reviews are of the high school, so they say little about the adult programs.
