Southern Idaho’s community college, credit and non-credit
The College of Southern Idaho (CSI) is the public community college for the eight-county Magic Valley region of south-central Idaho, based in Twin Falls. It awards Basic and Intermediate Technical Certificates and associate degrees in nursing and allied health, skilled trades, agriculture, business and technology, alongside transfer degrees and a bachelor of applied science. Many students are part-time: 81% of its 10,176 undergraduates in fall 2024, and dual-credit high-school students made up most of the 17,688 people who took credit classes in 2024-25. This page covers the whole college, including its non-credit Workforce Development & Training division, which sells short career courses and apprenticeship instruction by the course. CSI dropped its Gooding center from the catalog in 2025-26 and cut the ribbon on a new Jerome building in August 2026.
Career-technical programs and credentials
CSI’s career programs lead to a Basic Technical Certificate (BTC), an Intermediate Technical Certificate (ITC) or an Associate of Applied Science (AAS); registered nursing leads to an Associate of Science in Nursing. The table lists the main programs from the 2026-27 catalog and CSI’s program pages (October 2026). Where a program has several options, the catalog gives the credits for each but does not label which credential each figure belongs to; the lowest figure is normally the shortest certificate. A dash means the sources we checked gave nothing.

Most of these programs have limited enrollment: admission to the college is open, but nursing, allied health, HVAC, welding, automotive, diesel, collision, drafting, machining, culinary and veterinary technology students must apply separately to the program. Two health programs are taught through Idaho consortia: Physical Therapist Assistant (Idaho Consortium for PTA Education) and Medical Laboratory Technology (ICMLTE). The Applied Technology & Apprenticeship AAS lets journeymen and apprenticeship graduates in fields such as electrical, plumbing, industrial maintenance and lineworker turn a finished apprenticeship into an associate degree by adding 15 general-education credits. CSI also teaches agriculture, agribusiness, aquaculture and natural-resources programs and a bachelor of applied science in operations management. It has no credit pharmacy technician, phlebotomy, CDL, cosmetology or respiratory therapy program.
What the main programs cover
Registered nursing
The Associate of Science in Nursing is 73 credits and admits a cohort each fall and spring. Before applying, students need a current CNA certification and prerequisites including ALLH 220, BIOL 227, a communication course, PSYC 101 and MATH 143 or 254. Nursing courses are taught face-to-face and in hybrid format, with practice in the college’s simulation lab and clinical rotations at off-campus sites. The Idaho Board of Nursing approves the program and ACEN accredits it; graduates sit the NCLEX-RN. CSI’s program page reports an overall completion figure of 56% for 2024.
Practical nursing
Practical Nursing is an Intermediate Technical Certificate of 42 to 46 credits, approved by the Idaho Board of Nursing and the Idaho Division of Career Technical Education. Like other health programs at CSI it has limited enrollment, so students apply separately after college admission. Graduates leave with an IV therapy certification as well as eligibility for the NCLEX-PN. CSI also teaches a 10-credit CNA certificate of 120 hours, 88 in the classroom and lab and 32 in clinical practice, which leads to the Idaho CNA registry; the RN program requires a current CNA certification.
Radiologic and surgical technology
Radiologic Technology is a 79-credit AAS completed in five semesters, about 22 months. JRCERT’s December 2023 decision gave it an eight-year award, with an interim report due in the third quarter of 2026 and the next site visit in 2030. Surgical Technology is a shorter 60-credit AAS accredited by CAAHEP, ending in the NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist exam. Both are limited-enrollment programs with their own application. CSI also lists a 10-credit Surgical/Central Sterile Processing certificate, but the sources we checked do not describe its clinical training.
Emergency medical services and fire science
The Emergency Medical Services program is a ladder: a 14-credit EMT certificate, a 36-credit Advanced EMT certificate and a 66-credit paramedic AAS, with every course approved by the Idaho EMS Bureau and the paramedic level accredited by CAAHEP on CoAEMSP’s recommendation. Fire Science offers a 35-credit certificate and a 61-credit AAS that the catalog says lead to multiple fire-service credentials. Separately, the workforce division teaches firefighting to the NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II standard, with labs on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, for students who are 18 and hold NREMT certification.
Diesel, automotive and collision repair
Diesel Technology starts once a year, in the fall, and runs through the following summer before students complete 360 hours of co-op work; each class is capped at 19, and the program includes Daimler and MACS Worldwide certifications. The 60-credit Automotive Service Technology AAS trains on manufacturer-brand vehicles and includes work experience at a dealership or service center. Collision Repair students work on CSI’s own vehicles in the lab and then at a dealership or body shop. All three are limited-enrollment, and none of their pages names an outside accreditor.
Air conditioning, refrigeration and heat
The HVAC/R department awards certificates of 8 and 32.5 credits and a 60-credit AAS, with limited enrollment. A one-year evening program listed on the workforce division’s apprenticeship pages, which link to this credit program, meets Monday to Thursday from 5 to 10 pm with hands-on labs and starts each fall. It completes the educational requirement for Idaho’s state HVAC apprenticeship in one year. The curriculum is based on ARI, RSES, ACCA and ASHRAE material; most graduates earn EPA 608 certification, and students can earn HVAC Excellence credentials in up to 12 areas.
Workforce Development & Training: non-credit courses and apprenticeships
CSI’s Workforce Development & Training division sells short career courses, exam-prep classes and apprenticeship instruction by the course rather than by the credit, with open registration and no admission process for most courses. It is based in the Applied Technology and Innovation Center on the Twin Falls campus, and some classes run at the Mini-Cassia Center in Burley or online. CSI’s 2025 performance report counted 6,782 workforce course completions in 2024-25, a duplicated count in which one person taking three courses counts three times. The table lists the main career courses from the division’s course pages and its Fall 2026 catalog, checked in October 2026; where the two disagree, both prices are shown, and prices can change from term to term.

Workforce career courses range from $75 for a CPR card and $99 for forklift training to $1,605 for EMT Basic, and the three dental assisting levels total about $3,785. Idaho’s eligible-training-provider listing gives a CNA total of $1,095 including books, testing and supplies (listing date not shown). Online titles such as medical billing and coding, medical administrative assistant, bookkeeping administration, AutoCAD and project management are third-party online courses from partners such as ed2go and CareerStep. Machine Operator STRAP is a registered apprenticeship for high-school students at Jerome High School or Falls City Academy only.
Apprenticeships need an employer. The electrical and plumbing apprenticeships are four-year, state-approved programs of evening classroom instruction taken alongside work in the trade. Electrical apprentices must hold an Apprentice Electrical License from the Idaho Division of Building Safety, renewed each year, and work under a licensed journeyman or master electrician; plumbing apprentices need an Apprentice Plumbing License and must work under a licensed plumber. CSI states that it does not provide or arrange this employment. The Maintenance Tech apprenticeship likewise combines classes with on-the-job training at a partner employer, and most of its apprentices already work there.
Paying for workforce courses. Idaho LAUNCH grants can cover up to 80% of approved workforce training costs; CSI lists its firefighter and medical assisting courses as LAUNCH-eligible and its plumbing apprenticeship as LAUNCH-approved. Advanced Opportunities funding can pay for the $1,000 STRAP year. The division states no FAFSA route for its courses, so do not count on Pell Grants or student loans for non-credit training.
Tuition for 2026-27 and how students pay
CSI charges by the credit, with no flat full-time rate. Students from the six in-district counties pay the lowest rate; residents of four of those counties (Ada, Canyon, Bonneville and Kootenai) qualify because their counties have their own community-college districts.

Idaho residents from other counties pay a $50 county fee on up to 10 credits, so the fee is capped at $500 a semester. Their county pays that portion if the student files a Certificate of Residency; otherwise the student is billed. Payment plans carry a $30 fee. Program fees for tools, uniforms and clinicals are not on the tuition page, so ask each program for its costs. CSI’s cost-of-attendance page, whose figures match 2025-26 rates for 24 credits a year, puts tuition and fees at $3,528 for in-state students and $7,008 for out-of-state students, plus $1,060 for books. Niche puts the average net price at $7,576 a year (checked October 2026).
Credit students can use federal aid (school code 001619). Dual credit for high-school students can be paid by Idaho’s Advanced Opportunities program. CSI also lists its own scholarships and the state’s Idaho Opportunity Scholarship; the amounts were not in the sources we checked. Veterans can contact CSI’s veterans office about benefits.
Admissions and schedules
CSI has open admission to the college, and Niche lists a 100% acceptance rate. Limited-enrollment programs, listed above, take a separate application with their own requirements: registered nursing, for example, admits in fall and spring and requires a current CNA certificate, while Diesel Technology starts only in the fall and caps each class at 19. Classes are offered face-to-face, online, in the evening and at weekends. Workforce courses have open registration, with a minimum age of 16 or 18 depending on the course: welding and the electrical apprenticeship accept 16-year-olds, phlebotomy students must be 18 for clinicals, and EMT students must be 17 by the exam date.
Accreditation, pass rates and graduation rates
CSI has been accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) since December 1968. The Commission reaffirmed its accreditation after a Spring 2022 evaluation (letter of 25 July 2022), with one recommendation: the college was substantially in compliance but should keep expanding its assessment of dual-credit and off-site instruction. A mid-cycle review followed in Spring 2025, and the next comprehensive review is due in Spring 2029. We found no sanction.
Programmatic accreditors are listed in the programs table: ACEN for registered nursing, JRCERT for radiologic technology, CAAHEP for surgical technology, medical assisting and paramedic, CODA for dental hygiene, NAACLS for medical laboratory technology through its consortium, and the AVMA for veterinary technology. CSI’s PTA page lists the program as accredited by CAPTE, while federal College Navigator still shows an accreditation end date of 30 June 2026, so ask CSI for the current term. Practical nursing is approved by the Idaho Board of Nursing rather than a national accreditor, and CSI’s dental assistant pages mention no CODA accreditation.

For the graduation rate, the 41% figure comes from CSI’s own state report; federal College Navigator and Niche show 33%, for a cohort Navigator labels as starting in fall 2018, and the two should not be compared directly. CSI’s report gives retention of 68% for the fall 2023 cohort. The college-wide figures come from a report we read as a summary, so check the PDF if you need the exact numbers. Medical Laboratory Technology’s first CSI consortium class is due to graduate in 2026, so it has no CSI results yet. We found no published pass rates for dental hygiene boards, the CMA exam, the VTNE (in a report we did not review) or the workforce courses.
Before you enroll
- Open admission does not mean open programs. The college admits everyone, but most career-technical and health programs have limited enrollment and a separate application, and the RN program needs a current CNA certificate before you apply.
- The practical nursing pass rate fell. First-time NCLEX-PN results dropped to 70% (21 of 30) in 2025, from 81.25% in 2024. Ask the program what it has changed and how the latest cohort did.
- Surgical technology results are uneven. In 2025, 7 of 12 graduates passed the CST exam on the first attempt and 6 of 12 were employed, according to the program’s own page.
- Apprenticeships need a job in the trade. Electrical and plumbing apprentices must hold an Idaho apprentice license and work under a licensed tradesperson, and CSI does not arrange the employment.
- Online workforce courses leave the hands-on part to you. Pharmacy Technician mentions no externship, and Central Sterile Processing has no clinical, while its HSPA certification needs 400 hours of work experience that students find themselves. These non-credit courses also have no stated federal-aid route.
Where CSI teaches: Twin Falls, Burley and Jerome
Almost all career-technical training happens on the Twin Falls campus at 315 Falls Avenue: CSI’s program pages give only this address, and none names another teaching site. The Mini-Cassia Center at 1600 Parke Avenue in Burley mainly offers general-education, adult-education and dual-credit classes, plus an electrical apprenticeship section, the Maintenance Tech apprenticeship and the CNA written exam. In Jerome, CSI has offered academic courses, GED preparation, English-language learning and community education, with no trade training confirmed.
CSI cut the ribbon on the LeRoy Craig Jerome Center, a 20,000-square-foot building at 311 N Lincoln in Jerome, on 14 August 2026. Classes are expected to start in January 2027, and CSI has said it will host more than 10 career-technical programs, including food processing, automation and health sciences; which programs will move or be added has not been confirmed. CSI’s former Gooding center no longer appears in the catalog’s list of locations from 2025-26.
Housing and career help
CSI has residence halls on the Twin Falls campus, and dorm residents must buy a meal plan; its cost-of-attendance page lists $2,600 a year for on-campus housing against $6,934 off campus (academic year not stated). Career preparation is mostly built into the programs: clinical rotations in nursing and allied health, 360 co-op hours in diesel, and dealership or body-shop work in automotive and collision repair. CSI’s 2025 performance report gives 97% positive placement for its 2023-24 career-technical graduates. The workforce division runs hiring events and links to CSI’s work-based learning career support and its Eagle Jobs board.
What students say
On Niche, the College of Southern Idaho has an average of 3.96 out of 5 from 809 reviews and an overall grade of B (checked 7 October 2026). Reviewers most often praise caring, helpful professors, small classes, affordable tuition, tutoring and advising, and a friendly, safe campus with a scenic setting. Complaints focus on the dining hall (limited food and, for vegans, cross-contamination), the co-ed dorm arrangements, few social events, a shortage of affordable off-campus housing, technology problems and some professors’ grading or flexibility. Recent reviews are spread through 2025 with no obvious burst, but they mostly come from transfer and residential students and few mention specific career-technical programs, so they say little about trade training.
