A public technical college in Davis County, Utah
Davis Technical College, known as Davis Tech, is a public college in the Utah System of Higher Education, and the Utah Board of Higher Education sets its tuition. It has operated since 1978 and grew out of a Davis School District vocational center; it was previously called Davis Applied Technology College. It teaches career programs only and awards certificates, not degrees. The college’s FY2025 annual report counted 7,770 students, 23% of them high school students, who pay no tuition.
Almost everything is taught at the main campus in Kaysville. CDL training is at the Freeport West Extension in Clearfield, which opened its own driving range in May 2025, and a new Welding Technology building opened on the Kaysville campus in fiscal 2025.
Programs at Davis Tech
The program index lists 34 programs in six schools: Business and Information Technology, Construction, Health Professions, Manufacturing, Service Professions and Transportation. Two of them are open only to restricted groups (see below), so the table shows the main public programs. Costs are the college’s own estimates for adults, covering tuition, fees and course materials, from each program page (checked October 2026); the pages do not say which year they apply to.

Four programs hold programmatic accreditation: Practical Nursing (ACEN), Pharmacy Technician (ASHP), Welding (AWS) and Firefighter (Utah Fire and Rescue Academy). Dental Assisting no longer holds CODA accreditation, which College Navigator shows ended in 2019, and Surgical Technology does not hold CAAHEP accreditation and prepares students for the NCCT TS-C exam rather than the NBSTSA CST. Ten programs offer hybrid options, but none is fully online. Other public programs are Business (general office training with Microsoft Office and QuickBooks certifications), Software Development and Web and Graphic Design. A Medical Coding and Billing page (AAPC CPC preparation) is still on the college’s website, but the program is missing from the current program index, so ask the college whether it is enrolling.
What the main programs cover
Practical Nursing
The 27-credit program takes about 10 months, with clinical shifts of 2 to 12 hours on days and evenings. Applicants need a 3.0 cumulative GPA, a current CNA, anatomy and physiology and psychology or human development prerequisites with a C or better, a background check, a drug screen, BLS and to be 18 or older. Applications open three times a year; the window from 2 September to 14 October 2026 is for the class starting 11 February 2027. Davis Tech has no RN program, but graduates can continue into Weber State University’s ADN.
Surgical Technology
This 35-credit cohort program runs about 12 months: 24 hours a week in the classroom, then 40 hours a week of clinicals. It needs a supplemental application, prior patient care experience or a CNA, no felony in the last seven years and no drug conviction. The next cohort starts on 5 January 2027. Graduates prepare for the NCCT TS-C exam; the program does not hold CAAHEP accreditation, so students should check which credential local hospitals ask for.
Electrical and plumbing apprenticeships
Both are the classroom part of a Utah apprenticeship: 24 credits and 576 classroom hours over four years, which, with 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, meet the education requirement for the Utah journeyman electrician or journeyman plumber exam. Adults meet in the evening, Monday to Thursday for electrical and Tuesday to Thursday for plumbing. Davis Tech does not provide on-the-job training or act as a sponsor, so students must find their own employer, and they need a Utah apprentice licence from DOPL to enter year two.
Welding Technology
The 24-credit program takes about 12 months, with day and evening blocks. It is AWS-accredited and the college is an AWS Accredited Testing Facility, so students can test for AWS Certified Welder credentials on site. In fiscal 2025 the program moved into a new building on the Kaysville campus with 70 welding bays and 10 fabrication stations; the college’s annual report says this doubled the program’s capacity. Welding is also taught to incarcerated students at the college’s Utah Department of Corrections site.
Commercial Driver’s License Class A
This 6-credit program takes about two months, and some students finish in under a month. It runs Monday to Friday from 7am to 2pm with year-round open enrollment, meets the federal and Utah entry-level driver training rules and prepares students for Utah’s Class A skills tests. Applicants must be 18 or older (21 or older preferred) and need a valid licence, a Class A learner permit, a DOT medical card, a driving record and Accuplacer reading and arithmetic scores. Self-paying students also need a DOT drug screen and background check.
Tuition: $95 per credit hour in 2026-27
Davis Tech charges $95 per credit hour for 2026-27, the same as the year before: in March 2026 the Utah Board of Higher Education held tuition flat at most of the state’s technical colleges. The college publishes a single rate for all students and states no separate rate for out-of-state students. It estimates fees at $179 for a 24-credit program, and course material fees vary by course.
The program estimates, which include tuition, fees and materials, run from $549 (Phlebotomy) to $6,328 (Master Esthetician). The college’s About page puts the average total program cost under $3,500, and 28 of the 33 published estimates are below that figure; the five above it are Surgical Technology, Practical Nursing, Networking and Cybersecurity, Cosmetology and Master Esthetician. High school students pay no tuition, but the college’s 2025 Quick Facts sheet lists a $40 yearly high school student fee, and program fees and materials still apply. Federal Pell Grants are available: College Navigator reports that 11% of undergraduates received one in 2023-24, averaging $3,221, and that no federal loans were awarded that year. The Davis Tech Foundation awarded $463,199 in scholarships in fiscal 2025, according to the annual report. College Navigator counts 87 Post-9/11 GI Bill recipients in 2023-24, and the college gives credit for military training and has a student veteran organization.
Open admission, with a few selective programs
Davis Tech has open admission. Adults need a high school diploma or equivalent, and most programs require Accuplacer reading and math scores, which can be waived with transcripts, ACT or SAT scores or a prior degree. High school students in 11th or 12th grade can enrol from age 16 in most programs, and seniors receive admission letters each October. Practical Nursing, Surgical Technology and Firefighter have their own applications and deadlines; Advanced EMT needs a Utah EMT licence; Control Systems and Robotics and Advanced Automotive require a feeder program first; and the apprenticeships need an employer from year two.
Most programs are open-entry, with bi-weekly or monthly starts, and meet in three-hour blocks: morning and afternoon blocks Monday to Friday, plus evening blocks Monday to Thursday in many programs. The apprenticeships meet only in the evening, CDL runs weekdays from 7am to 2pm, and Practical Nursing and Surgical Technology run as cohorts.
Accreditation and results
Davis Tech is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE), which has accredited it since 2006. The college’s FY2025 annual report says its most recent reaffirmation ended with zero findings. Practical Nursing is accredited by ACEN, Pharmacy Technician by ASHP and Welding by AWS, and the Firefighter program by the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy.
The clearest outcome is nursing licensure. Utah Division of Professional Licensing data show Davis Tech’s Practical Nursing graduates passed the NCLEX-PN on the first attempt at 97.66% in 2025 (125 of 128 candidates), 96.80% in 2024 and 98.28% in 2023. For the college as a whole, its FY2025 annual report gives a completion rate of 79%, a placement rate of 82% and a licensure rate of 100%, as reported by the college without a stated definition. College Navigator reports a federal graduation rate of 57% for full-time, first-time students who started in 2021-22, counting those who finished within 150% of normal program time; that measure covers a different group of students from the college’s own figures.
Before you enroll
- Davis Tech awards certificates, not degrees. The college says many certificates can count for up to 30 credits toward a Weber State University degree, so check how your program transfers if you plan to continue.
- The electrical and plumbing apprenticeships are classroom instruction only. Davis Tech does not sponsor apprentices, so you need your own employer and a DOPL apprentice licence by year two.
- Dental Assisting is not CODA-accredited (it lapsed in 2019), and Surgical Technology is not CAAHEP-accredited and prepares for the NCCT TS-C rather than the CST. Check which credentials employers near you expect.
- Phlebotomy leads to a college certificate only; the program page names no national certification exam.
- CDL is taught only at the Freeport West Extension in Clearfield, not at the Kaysville campus.

Davis Tech also teaches at three instructional sites that are not open to the public: the Clearfield Job Corps center (Home Health Aide, for Job Corps students only), a Utah Department of Corrections site in Salt Lake City (welding, machining, automotive, culinary, business and IT programs for incarcerated students) and the Mill Creek Youth Center in Ogden (Manufacturing Technology, for residents). Nursing Assistant also runs high school sections at Clearfield and Morgan high schools.
Career help and transfer to Weber State
We found no student housing at Davis Tech. Its website links to a Student Job Board and work-study openings, and externships or clinicals are built into Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Practical Nursing, Surgical Technology and Nursing Assistant. Through Tech Transfer, certificate credits can count toward a Weber State associate or bachelor’s degree, and Weber State’s JumpStart general education courses cost $95 per credit. The Kaysville campus also has a Culinary Café and a Salon & Spa where students provide services to the public.
What students say
On Niche, Davis Technical College is rated 4.16 out of 5 from 89 reviews, with an overall grade of B (checked 9 October 2026). Reviewers most often praise helpful, approachable instructors, hands-on training aimed at a specific career, and the chance for motivated students to finish quickly. Complaints include programs that feel largely self-paced through videos and textbooks, mentioned for IT and cybersecurity, and broken lab equipment. These themes come from the small number of reviews Niche displays, and we could not check whether reviews were invited by the school or posted in bursts, so treat them as a rough guide. We did not check Trustpilot or GradReports.
