South Carolina’s General Assembly gave the green light in 1947 to establish a new technical college, and in 1948, the Denmark Branch of the South Carolina Trade School System opened. Its original mission was to train Black citizens in various trades during an era when segregation shaped educational access.
Today, Denmark Technical College holds the distinction as South Carolina’s sole two-year HBCU (historically Black college and university). Located in rural Bamberg County, the institution has evolved far beyond its origins. What began as education born from necessity now serves citizens across all backgrounds and income levels.
Each year, roughly 1,700 credit students and 400 continuing education students walk through its doors.
