A mostly online university with evening campuses
DeVry University was founded in 1931 by Herman DeVry and Lee de Forest and is based in Lisle, Illinois. It teaches technology, business, accounting and health information programs, from undergraduate certificates to bachelor’s degrees, and master’s degrees through its Keller Graduate School of Management, which merged into DeVry in 2002. Federal data counted 31,296 students in fall 2024, 28,046 of them undergraduates. Nearly all programs are taught online in 8-week sessions. Its 16 campuses in 10 states are office suites where hybrid students attend evening classes, typically Monday to Friday from 6 to 10 pm. Since 11 December 2018 DeVry has been owned by Cogswell Education, LLC of Greenwich, Connecticut, which took it over from Adtalem Global Education, its former parent. In 2016 DeVry settled Federal Trade Commission charges over its job and earnings advertising, and the Department of Education has since approved loan discharges for former students (details below).

All programs below are offered online to students in any state. DeVry does not publish which programs hold in-person class weeks at each campus. Costs are tuition only at $514 per credit hour (July 2025 to May 2026 sessions; our calculation) and exclude fees.

DeVry also offers undergraduate certificates in AI and Data Analytics, Accounting, and IT, Networking and Programming Essentials; associate and bachelor’s degrees in Cybersecurity and Networking and in Engineering Technology (accredited by ABET’s Engineering Technology commission); and a bachelor’s in Technical Management with a CAHIIM-accredited Health Information Management option. Keller’s graduate programs include the MBA, master’s degrees in accounting, human resources, information systems, IT and network management, project management (accredited by PMI’s Global Accreditation Center) and public administration, and graduate tuition was $776 per credit hour for 2025–26. Finance, marketing, hospitality and supply chain are specializations inside the business administration bachelor’s, not separate degrees, and DeVry no longer lists a criminal justice program. DeVry holds the NSA/DHS Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense designation for its cyber programs. In June 2026 the Higher Learning Commission approved DeVry to offer competency-based education.
What the main programs cover
Medical Billing and Coding certificate
The 31-credit certificate is built around coding courses: CPT Coding with Application, ICD-10-CM with Application, Health Insurance Billing and Reimbursement, Advanced Medical Coding with AI Resources, and EHR and Digital Health. It includes a Coding Practicum and Review course that prepares students for the AAPC’s Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam; eligible students get a complimentary prep course and an exam voucher. The practicum is a course, not an externship at a healthcare employer, and DeVry’s program page mentions no externship.
Health Information Coding certificate
This longer, 40-credit, 13-course certificate includes hospital coding courses: Hospital Medical Coding with AI Resources, ICD-10-PCS (the procedure codes hospitals use) and a Coding Practicum and CCS Review. It aims at AHIMA’s Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential. Students who score 85% or higher on the review receive an exam voucher and an AHIMA student membership.
Health Information Technology (AAS)
The associate is 61 credits over 16 courses, taught entirely online. Its Health Information specialization is accredited by CAHIIM through 2029–30, and the program prepares students for AHIMA’s Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam. Students work in 3M coding software and the EHR Go electronic health record. A prep course is built in, and an 85% score earns an exam voucher.
Information Technology and Networking
DeVry stacks this program in three steps: a certificate, then a 60-credit associate, then a 120-credit, 37-class bachelor’s. Courses align with CompTIA Network+, Security+ and Cloud Essentials+ and Cisco’s CCNA. Bachelor’s students choose a specialization in Mobile and Networked Devices, Cyber Security, or Cloud-Based Networking and Virtualization. The bachelor’s is accredited by ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission and recognized by the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies (NICCS).
Software Development (BS)
The 120-credit, 36-class bachelor’s is accredited by ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission. Students choose a track in AI and Analytics, Software Design and Engineering, or Application Development, or take a general track. DeVry says it is also taught in hybrid form at select locations, so ask your nearest campus whether it runs onsite class weeks.
Website Design and Website Development certificates
The two certificates split the web into design and code. Website Design (36 credits) covers Visual Design, Digital Imaging, Information Design, Responsive Web Design, Web Animation and Web Interface Design. Website Development (38 credits) covers Interactive Web Page Scripting, Database Systems and Programming, and Dynamic Website Development with database integration. Both run about 10 classes and prepare students for Adobe Certified Professional exams.
Cost and paying for it
- Tuition: $514 per credit hour for all undergraduate programs and certificates, and $776 per credit hour for Keller graduate programs, for sessions from July 2025 to May 2026. DeVry’s California enrollment agreement dated June 2026 still shows $514, and in February 2026 DeVry reported a sixth consecutive year of frozen tuition. Keller’s Fast Track option costs $4,200 per subscription period.
- Fees (2025–26): $30 application fee, $40 student services fee per session, a one-time $400 learning-platform access fee, and a course resource fee averaging about $150 per session. Arizona’s enrollment agreement adds a $40 e-textbook fee per course and parking of up to $60 per session.
- Totals: at $514 per credit, tuition alone is about $15,934 for the 31-credit billing and coding certificate and $61,680 for a 120-credit bachelor’s. College Navigator lists published undergraduate tuition and fees of $17,408 for 2024–25, and Niche gives an average net price of $30,889 a year from federal data.
- Military: active-duty service members and their spouses pay $250 per credit hour for undergraduate and $575 for graduate study, with the application fee waived. DeVry accepts Montgomery and Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, takes part in the Yellow Ribbon program, and Keller offers a Veteran’s Appreciation Grant of up to $4,500.
DeVry takes part in federal student aid (FAFSA school code 010727), including Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study and Direct Loans. Its own awards include the Women+Tech Scholarship (up to $1,500 per semester), the Business Edge Scholarship (up to $7,000 in total), the Future-Ready Transfer Scholarship (up to $3,584 for an associate or $7,168 for a bachelor’s), the Dennis Keller Scholarship (up to $4,800 for graduate students), an Outside Scholarship Match, and a $2,400 Tech Essentials Grant for students who finish an IT, Networking or Programming Essentials certificate. Alumni discounts are 15% for undergraduate study and 15% to 20% for Keller programs (DeVry’s pages differ). DeVry reported awarding $90 million in institutional aid in 2025.
Applying and when classes meet
DeVry has no fixed intake: new 8-week sessions start every 8 weeks, six times a year, grouped into three semesters. Applying by phone with an admissions representative costs nothing; otherwise the application fee is $30. Online courses run on the session calendar rather than at a student’s own pace. At the campuses, DeVry’s location pages say onsite classes are typically held Monday to Friday between 6 and 10 pm; we found no current evidence of the weekend or daytime classes, the “Cycle 1 / Cycle 2” schedule or the externships that older descriptions of DeVry mentioned.
Accreditation and results
DeVry has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 27 October 1981, and Keller is covered by the same accreditation. The commission’s evaluation of 18 February 2025 ended with a decision to continue DeVry’s accreditation. The commission lists no current sanctions, and the next reaffirmation is scheduled for 2030–31. Programmatic accreditation comes from ACBSP (business), ABET (computing and engineering technology), CAHIIM (health information) and PMI’s Global Accreditation Center (project management). The New York location operates as DeVry College of New York under DeVry University’s accreditation.

The FY2021 default rate covers years when federal loan payments were paused, so it says little about how borrowers repay. Niche, citing federal data, shows median earnings of $63,561 five years after graduation and 91% of graduates employed one year after graduation. DeVry reports that 88.5% of students continued from one session to the next in 2025, by its own definition.
Federal actions over DeVry’s past advertising
- FTC settlement, 15 December 2016: DeVry and its then-parent agreed to a $100 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission: $49.4 million in cash for refunds and $50.6 million in debt relief, including $30.35 million in private loans issued from September 2008 to September 2015. The FTC alleged DeVry falsely advertised that 90% of graduates actively seeking work found jobs in their field within six months and that its bachelor’s graduates earned 15% more than other colleges’ graduates. The order bars DeVry from misrepresenting employment and earnings outcomes.
- Borrower defense, 16 February 2022: the Department of Education found that from 2008 to 2015 DeVry “made widespread substantial misrepresentations” about job placement, saying the actual rate was about 58% rather than the advertised 90%. It approved about $71.7 million in loan discharges for about 1,800 borrowers who had filed claims, and said it would seek to recover the cost from DeVry. It was the first such approval against a school still operating.
- Recovery dispute: in August 2022 the Department told DeVry it would seek about $23.6 million covering 649 borrowers. DeVry sued the Department in federal court in Illinois on 11 October 2022. An administrative law judge paused the recovery proceeding in October 2023; on 1 May 2024 the Secretary of Education lifted that pause and sent the case back for a fresh “good cause” analysis. We could not confirm the current status or outcome of either the recovery proceeding or the lawsuit.
- Further approvals, 16 January 2025: the Department approved borrower-defense relief for about 4,100 more DeVry borrowers, based on its 2022 findings. In a statement on 23 January 2025, DeVry called the allegations “unsubstantiated and wrong”, said they concern advertising from more than a decade earlier under prior ownership, and said it is challenging the program in court.
Campus changes
DeVry’s Irving, Texas campus has moved from Regent Boulevard to 100 E Royal Lane, Suite 105. The San Antonio, Texas and Henderson, Nevada locations no longer appear on DeVry’s site, in its 2026–27 catalog or on the Higher Learning Commission’s list; their web addresses now lead to the Irving page and to an online-only Nevada page. We could not find the dates these changes took effect. We found no announced new campuses.
Career help and support
DeVry’s career services offer résumé help, interview coaching and networking during enrollment and after graduation. Certification support is concrete in the health information programs, where students who meet the score thresholds receive CPC, CCS or RHIT exam vouchers. DeVry does not provide housing; its campuses are office suites, with free parking at Ontario and Iselin and paid parking near the Chicago Loop site.
Before you enroll
- A campus near you does not mean your program meets there. DeVry’s programs are online, onsite classes are held on weekday evenings, and DeVry does not publish which programs run in-person class weeks at each campus. Ask the campus before you rely on face-to-face teaching.
- Federal data show 37% of students who started in fall 2018 graduated within 150% of normal time, and 37% of part-time first-time bachelor’s students returned for a second year.
- Credit-hour pricing adds up: a 120-credit bachelor’s is about $61,680 in tuition at 2025–26 rates before fees, and Niche’s average net price from federal data is $30,889 a year.
- Finance, marketing, hospitality and game programming appear at DeVry only as specializations within broader degrees, not as degrees of their own; supply chain management and entrepreneurship are a bachelor’s specialization or a Keller graduate certificate, not degrees. Engineering Technology degrees are accredited by ABET’s engineering technology commission, not as engineering degrees.
- The Department of Education has approved loan discharges for thousands of former students after finding DeVry misrepresented job-placement rates from 2008 to 2015; DeVry disputes the findings and said in January 2025 that it is challenging the program in court.
What students say
On Niche, DeVry University-Illinois has a rating of 4.06 out of 5 from 2,941 reviews (checked October 2026), the largest sample we found. Trustpilot shows 4.6 out of 5 from 155 reviews, and DeVry replies to every negative one; we could not tell whether reviewers were invited by the school. ConsumerAffairs shows a headline 4.6 out of 5 from 716 reviews it calls verified, but of the 646 star ratings it lists, 366 are five-star and 224 one-star, which average about 3.4, so we treat its headline score with caution.
Reviewers most often praise:
- the flexibility of online and hybrid study for working adults;
- instructors who are knowledgeable and act as mentors;
- responsive advisors and free tutoring and library help.
The most common complaints are:
- high cost and doubts about value for money;
- phone support that is hard to reach and advisors who give conflicting answers;
- few hands-on or internship opportunities, and career services that did not meet expectations.
