EMCC: a public two-year college in Bangor
Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) is a public two-year college in the Maine Community College System. It lists 30 programs of study plus two options, leading to associate degrees, certificates and diplomas, and nearly all of them are taught on its campus on Hogan Road in Bangor. The college reported 2,375 students in programs and credit courses in fall 2022, up 14.3% on the year before.
Its career programs center on health and public safety (an Associate Degree in Nursing for future RNs, Medical Radiography, Surgical Technology, Medical Assistant Technology, Paramedicine and Fire Science) and on the trades. It teaches automotive, diesel, welding, HVAC, electrical, plumbing and building trades, with ASE Education Foundation accreditation for Automotive Technology. The Bangor campus has two residence halls.

Programmatic accreditation, as the college lists it: ACEN for Nursing (through 2028) with Maine State Board of Nursing approval; JRCERT for Medical Radiography; CAAHEP for Surgical Technology (on ARC-STSA’s recommendation), Paramedicine (CoAEMSP) and Medical Assistant Technology (MAERB); the ASE Education Foundation for Automotive Technology; and the AWS S.E.N.S.E. standard for Welding.
EMCC has no practical nursing (LPN), nursing assistant, phlebotomy, pharmacy technician, sonography, respiratory or dental program, and no truck-driving or CDL training: the diesel program trains mechanics. Medical Office Technology is no longer offered, and the only computer program is Computer Technology. Other programs include Business Management, Criminal Justice, Digital Graphic Design, Early Childhood Education, Human Services, Education options and Liberal Studies.
What the main programs cover
Nursing (Associate Degree in Nursing)
The ADN prepares students for the NCLEX-RN and an RN licence. Applicants must take the TEAS and complete prerequisites in anatomy and physiology (BIOL 215), English (ENGL 101) and math (MATH 105). Entry is in summer or fall on a rolling basis, with priority transcripts due by 30 December and immunizations by 15 May. Clinical rotations may be scheduled on days, evenings or weekends, so students need flexible hours. Applicants choose a location, and the college mentions a distance-site option. The nursing page mentions no LPN exit partway through.
Medical Radiography
This two-year program is selective, and applicants take the HESI A2 exam. Clinical training rotates through nine internship sites, among them Eastern Maine Medical Center, St. Joseph, the Bangor VA, Maine Coast Hospital in Ellsworth, Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln and Blue Hill, and six externship sites including MDI, Down East, Cary, Houlton, A.R. Gould and Northern Maine Medical Center. Students should plan for travel between sites. Graduates sit the ARRT certification exam; JRCERT gave the program an eight-year award.
Paramedicine: EMT, AEMT and Paramedic
The EMS ladder has three steps. The EMT step is two courses, EMS 127 lecture (4 credits) and EMS 128 lab (3 credits), about 150 hours, offered every fall, spring and summer, with labs capped at eight students. The AEMT Certificate takes two semesters from fall, with 3 hours of lecture and 4 hours of lab a week and at least 180 clinical hours in spring. The Paramedicine AAS adds about 180 clinical hours each semester, high-fidelity simulation and a field internship, and leads to the NREMT paramedic exam.
Automotive Technology
The 65-credit AAS and the 33-credit certificate cover all eight ASE areas, and the program holds ASE Education Foundation accreditation at Master Automotive level. EMCC also teaches manufacturer curricula: MOPAR CAP, which the college calls Maine’s only, Subaru University and GM STEP, with an optional Toyota curriculum. The 2026-27 catalog lists a $2,500 required tools fee for course ATA 235, so budget for it alongside tuition.
Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating
This AAS covers three licensing tracks. Students prepare for EPA 608 Universal refrigerant certification and CETP gas certification, which leads toward a Maine Gas Technician licence. The program meets the full education requirement and part of the experience requirement for the journeyman oil burner licence, and part of the requirements for the limited refrigeration electrician licence. Graduates still need further experience or requirements to complete the oil and refrigeration licences.
Plumbing Technology
Plumbing is taught at the United Technologies Center, a regional high-school career and technical center at 200 Hogan Road in Bangor, rather than on the main campus. Courses cover residential and light-commercial plumbing and the Maine State Plumbing Code. Graduates may sit the Maine journeyman plumbing exam; passing it earns a journeyman-in-training licence, which is upgraded after 2,000 hours of supervised work. Students pay for a background check of about $75.
Tuition and how students pay
EMCC’s 2026-27 catalog gives one in-state rate for all Maine residents (there is no in-district tier), a lower out-of-state rate for New England students in the New England Regional Student Program, and a full out-of-state rate. Rates are unchanged from 2024-25. Every student also pays $42 per credit in mandatory fees: a $29 comprehensive fee and a $13 student services fee.

Some programs add costs: health-program liability insurance is $13 a year ($55 for paramedic students), and the catalog lists program fees from $25 up to $2,500 for automotive tools, nursing testing and lab fees of $675 to $770 per course, and certification fees of $467 in HVAC, $400 in welding and $247 in surgical technology. Admission tests cost $92 (TEAS) and $124.03 (HESI A2).
EMCC takes federal student aid. The Maine Free College Scholarship, made permanent when the governor signed it at EMCC on 10 April 2026, covers the full cost of tuition after other grants for eligible recent Maine high-school graduates. Residency rules also give the in-state rate to students in special programs such as APPLE and a New Brunswick Community College initiative. The college’s tuition and fees page lists current charges, including room and board.
Open admission, with selective health programs
Most EMCC programs admit applicants openly. Nursing and Medical Radiography are selective: Nursing requires the TEAS and prerequisite courses, and Radiography requires the HESI A2. Other health programs have their own entry criteria, so check the program page before applying.
Schedules vary by program. Electricians Technology is a part-time evening program, Medical Assistant courses mostly run by day or evening, and nursing clinicals can fall on days, evenings or weekends. EMT courses start every fall, spring and summer, while Surgical Technology and the AEMT certificate start in fall. The Career and Technical Education option in Education runs on Zoom, but none of the program pages we checked describes a main career program as fully online.
Accreditation and results
EMCC is a member of the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), which first accredited it in 2004. Its last comprehensive evaluation was in 2019, and the next is scheduled for spring 2029. Program results below are the college’s own figures from its program pages.

The nursing pass rate has moved between 78.95% and 100% over three years, and on-time completion fell to 48.3% for the fall 2022 cohort from 68.6% and 69.5% for the two cohorts before it. The college does not give cohort sizes. Surgical Technology also reports 100% employer satisfaction. Before you enroll
- Nursing is selective, and fewer than half of the fall 2022 nursing cohort (48.3%) finished on time. Ask the college about current completion rates and what support it offers.
- There is no LPN or practical nursing program, and the nursing page mentions no PN exit from the ADN, so students who leave partway should not expect a practical nursing credential.
- The diesel program trains mechanics and includes no CDL or truck-driving training.
- Plumbing is taught at the United Technologies Center rather than the main campus, and passing the journeyman exam brings a journeyman-in-training licence; the full licence follows 2,000 supervised hours.
- The Career and Technical Education option in Education is open only to teachers already employed by a CTE center. It is not a route into teaching for new students.

EMCC also shares the Katahdin Region Higher Education Center in East Millinocket with the University of Maine System. The center offers classes by interactive television and in person, along with advising, tutoring, a library and customized business training, and it has hosted an EMCC nursing cohort in the past. Ask the college which EMCC courses currently run there.
Housing and training facilities
EMCC has two residence halls on the Bangor campus, Acadia Hall and Kineo Hall; room and board prices are on the college’s tuition and fees page. Fire Science students in the Live-In option live rent-free in partner fire stations in exchange for on-call hours. Culinary students train in the Rangeley Café, and EMS courses use the campus Public Safety Training Center.
