A Florida research university with a few career-track programs
Florida International University (FIU) is a public research university and a member of the State University System of Florida, governed by its Board of Trustees under the Florida Board of Governors. The legislature created it in 1965 and it opened in 1972. It had 49,852 degree-seeking students in fall 2025 and offers more than 190 degrees, from bachelor’s to doctoral. This page covers the parts that match our trade and career program pages: nursing from the BSN to the nurse practitioner MSN, the occupational therapy master’s, and bachelor’s degrees in cybersecurity, information technology, construction management and hospitality. Florida residents’ tuition did not rise for 2026-27, while the non-resident fee rose for the second year running.

FIU also trains physical therapists, but only through the graduate Doctor of Physical Therapy, so it has no physical therapist assistant program. Its electrical engineering degrees are engineering, not electrician training, and the online early childhood education bachelor’s (early childhood development major) states that it does not lead to teacher certification. Business, accounting, criminal justice, psychology and the arts are academic majors and are not listed as trade programs here. Some graduate business programs are taught at FIU Downtown on Brickell, and architecture studios meet at the Miami Beach Urban Studios on Lincoln Road.
What the main programs cover
Traditional and Accelerated BSN
Both routes are limited access: students apply to the nursing program separately. The Traditional BSN is an upper-division program taught at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus; it admits in fall and spring, and its science prerequisites must have been completed within the last 10 years. The Accelerated Option is for students who already hold a bachelor’s in another field; it runs four semesters full time at the Biscayne Bay Campus, starts only in fall and admits on a competitive science GPA. Both include clinical rotations and prepare graduates for the NCLEX-RN.
RN to BSN (online)
The RN to BSN is FIU’s oldest nursing program, dating from the college’s start in 1972, and is now taught entirely online through FIU Online. It is for nurses who already hold an RN licence, and it admits new students every semester rather than once a year. Graduates earn the same CCNE-accredited degree as students on the campus routes. We have not confirmed which states it can enroll online nurses from, so nurses outside Florida should ask before applying.
Nurse practitioner and nurse educator MSN
The graduate nursing program offers four nurse practitioner populations (adult-gerontology primary care, pediatric primary care, psychiatric-mental health and family) and a nurse educator track. Nurses with a master’s already can take post-graduate NP or nurse educator certificates, and one dual option combines an NP track with the educator certificate. Foreign-educated physicians enter through the combined BSN/MSN route at Biscayne Bay, which needs a 2.50 GPA to start and a 3.2 GPA to move on to the master’s tracks.
Occupational Therapy (MSOT)
The MSOT is a 67-credit, six-semester master’s that qualifies graduates to sit for the NBCOT certification exam; FIU does not offer an occupational therapy assistant program or an OTD. Cohorts are about 50: FIU reports 50 admitted and 40 graduates in the 2025 class, 54 and 45 in 2024, and 49 and 39 in 2023. Its 2025 brochure claims a 100% exam pass rate and 90% employment, without saying which years those figures cover.
Cybersecurity and hospitality bachelor’s degrees
The Cybersecurity BS, launched in fall 2020, covers network security, cryptography, ethical hacking and digital forensics and ends with a two-semester senior design project; it is not among FIU Online’s online degrees. The Hospitality Management BS, at Biscayne Bay or online, lets students choose electives in beverage, event, lodging, restaurant and culinary, or travel and tourism management, and requires at least 500 documented hours of industry work plus one internship (300 or 500 hours).

Rates are from FIU’s tuition and fees regulation (FIU-1101, revised 29 April 2026). On top of the per-credit charges, students pay a $93.69 health fee and a $10 athletic fee each semester. Graduate rates for fall 2026 are $455.64 per credit for residents and $1,146.38 for non-residents, with separate schedules for nursing and health sciences, law and medicine.
Florida residents’ rate is unchanged, but the out-of-state fee rose 10% in fall 2025 and another 15% in fall 2026, according to FIU’s OneStop fee notices. FIU’s own Estimate Your Costs page still shows an older, lower non-resident figure, so out-of-state students should confirm the current amount with FIU before budgeting.
FIU takes part in the federal student aid programs. Niche, using federal data, puts the average net price after aid at $11,178 a year (checked October 2026).
Admissions, nursing starts and schedules
Niche puts FIU’s overall acceptance rate at 55% (checked October 2026). Nursing is limited access with its own application: the Traditional BSN admits in fall and spring, the Accelerated Option only in fall, and the online RN to BSN every semester. FIU at I-75 in Miramar schedules early-morning, evening and fast-track weekend programs for adult learners. FIU Online lists about 50 online bachelor’s degrees, including the RN to BSN, information technology and hospitality.
Accreditation and results
FIU is accredited to award associate, bachelor’s, master’s, educational specialist and doctoral degrees by The Commission on Colleges and Universities, the new name of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) since 1 Sep 2026 (FIU’s page still uses the old name). Its accreditation was last reaffirmed in 2021, and the next reaffirmation is due in 2031. CCNE accredits FIU’s nursing degrees, ACOTE accredits the MSOT (next accreditation cycle 2028), and FIU states that the Moss School of Construction is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE).

The 2026 Accountability Plan was published by the Florida Board of Governors in June 2026. Physical therapy is shown for context only; FIU has no physical therapist assistant program. We found no published job-placement rates for the cybersecurity, IT, construction management or hospitality degrees.
Before you enroll
- FIU is a research university, not a trade school. Most of its more than 190 degrees are academic bachelor’s and graduate programs; this page covers only those that match our trade and career program pages.
- Getting into FIU is not getting into nursing. The BSN is limited access with its own application, the Traditional BSN’s science prerequisites must be under 10 years old, and the Accelerated Option admits only once a year, in fall.
- Check the non-resident price. The out-of-state fee rose 10% in fall 2025 and 15% in fall 2026, bringing non-resident undergraduate charges to $728.38 per credit, while FIU’s cost estimator still shows an older figure.
- Some program names do not mean what they sound like. Physical therapy is a doctorate (no assistant program), electrical engineering is not electrician training, and the online early childhood education bachelor’s does not lead to teacher certification.
- Hospitality requires work hours. The bachelor’s needs at least 500 documented hours of industry work plus an internship of 300 or 500 hours on top of coursework.

What students say
On Niche, FIU averages 3.81 out of 5 from 7,893 reviews, with an overall grade of A (checked 10 October 2026). Reviewers most often praise strong academic programs and supportive, committed professors, a welcoming community with many clubs and events, and modern facilities. The most common complaints are administrative inefficiency, parking, a large commuter population that limits campus social life, and financial-aid processes and advising, especially for first-generation students. The reviews cover the whole university rather than the programs on this page, and we could not tell whether many were invited by FIU or posted in bursts.
