Hunter Business School: a Long Island career school since 1972
Hunter Business School is a privately owned, for-profit career school founded in 1972, with a main campus in Levittown in Nassau County and a branch campus in Medford in Suffolk County. Despite its name, it has no stand-alone business program: its eight programs train medical assistants, practical nurses, radiologic technologists, sonographers, computer technicians, web developers and medical billers. All are clock-hour diplomas or certificates, and the school grants no degrees. Two of the health programs are hybrid, and both billing programs are fully online. Federal IPEDS data put enrollment at 1,261 in 2024, about two-thirds full-time, and medical assisting accounted for 284 of its 799 awards that year. Results vary widely between programs and, for practical nursing, between the two campuses.

Medical Assistant and Diagnostic Medical Sonography are accredited by CAAHEP, and Radiologic Technology by JRCERT, which gave it its maximum eight-year award in 2023. Radiologic Technology is also approved by the New York State Department of Health, and the ARRT exam it prepares for satisfies New York licensure. Practical Nursing is registered with the New York State Education Department, according to the school.
What the main programs cover
Medical Assistant
The 910-hour diploma runs 7.5 months (31 weeks) by day or 15 months (57 weeks) by evening at both campuses. Phlebotomy and EKG are taught as part of the course work, and a certification-review course prepares students for a certification exam, which the school does not name. The program ends with a 190-hour externship; the school says students are placed at sites such as Northwell Health, Optum, CityMD, AFC Urgent Care and NY Cancer & Blood Specialists. Classes are in person.
Practical Nursing
Practical Nursing is a 1,332-hour certificate that combines classroom theory, skills labs and 355 hours of clinical practice. The day schedule takes 13 months (50 weeks) and the evening and weekend schedule 17 months (67 weeks), at Levittown or Medford. Graduates sit the NCLEX-PN to become licensed practical nurses. Entry is by an in-person ATI TEAS test with a score of 58.7% or higher; the online version of the test is not accepted.
Radiologic Technology
This hybrid program, taught only at Levittown, is 2,080 hours over four semesters (16 months, 70 weeks) of day study: 450 hours online, 630 in school and 1,000 clinical hours across four clinical courses. It prepares graduates for the ARRT Radiography exam. It is meant for people who already hold an associate degree from an accredited institution, and since 11 May 2026 every applicant must also score at least 75% on the HESI Admission Assessment. One cohort starts each year; testing for the January 2027 class is full, and testing for September 2027 opens in February 2027.
Diagnostic Medical Sonography
The sonography diploma is the school’s longest program: 2,470 hours over 23 months (82 weeks) of day study, with 882 hours online, 412 in school and 1,176 clinical hours in five rotations. It is taught at Medford and accredited by CAAHEP in general sonography (abdomen-extended and OB/GYN) and adult cardiac sonography. Graduates take the ARDMS registry exams in abdomen, OB/GYN and adult cardiac, and students may sit them up to 60 days before graduating. The school reported 96.6% retention for 2024.
Computer Technician Networking Specialist
This 900-hour diploma is taught in person at both campuses through lectures and labs, over 7.5 months (30 weeks) by day or 15 months (57 weeks) by evening. It is centred on CompTIA A+ and covers the objectives of Network+, though the school does not name Network+ as an exam students take. No externship is listed. The school reported 2023-24 retention of 93% at Levittown and 94% at Medford, and federal data count 98 computer installation and repair awards in 2024.
Web Application Design & Development
The hybrid web diploma is 900 hours over 7.5 months (30 weeks), day only, with 720 hours online. Courses cover HTML and CSS, JavaScript, Python, PHP and MySQL, SQL database design, ReactJS, cross-platform mobile development, e-commerce and content management systems, AI for web development and digital marketing, plus two team projects. It ends with a 180-hour in-person externship (WA240), and the school says students who excel may be offered a job there. No certification exam is named.
Cost: one published price per program
Hunter publishes one price for each program, the same for every student and for day and evening schedules. The school’s tuition and fees page gives no effective date; the totals below are the current ones.

The cost of attendance also lists licensing fees of $343 for Practical Nursing, $475 for Radiologic Technology and $525 for Sonography, and the school tells students to expect extra out-of-pocket costs for exams, immunizations and travel to externships. Billing certification exam fees are not included in tuition. Federal data put the average net price after grants at $23,045 a year (2024).
Hunter takes federal student aid under school code 015599: Pell Grants, FSEOG, Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and Parent PLUS Loans. It is an approved ACCES-VR vocational rehabilitation provider and is approved by the New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs. VA benefits, including the Post-9/11 GI Bill, cover on-campus programs only, so hybrid and online programs are excluded. The site has a scholarship registration form but names no scholarships or amounts.
Admissions and schedules
Applicants interview with an admissions representative, submit an application, a signed enrollment agreement and the registration fee, and must be at least 17 with a high school diploma, TASC or GED (foreign transcripts are verified). They must be US citizens, permanent residents or eligible non-citizens, show English proficiency, and settle aid applications or a payment plan before class. Practical Nursing and Radiologic Technology add their own entrance tests, and Radiologic Technology requires an associate degree.
The school accepts applications throughout the year. Medical Assistant and Networking run by day or evening, and Practical Nursing by day or on evenings and weekends. Radiologic Technology, Sonography and Web Application are day only, and the Medical Billing Specialist diploma is evening only.
Accreditation and results
Hunter is accredited by the Middle States Association’s Commission on Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS) in its career and technical division, which CHEA lists as the school’s accreditor, and the Medford branch is covered by the same accreditation. It is licensed by the New York State Education Department’s Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision.

Practical nursing results split by campus. At Medford, 87.27% of first-time NCLEX-PN candidates passed in 2024 (48 of 55) and 92.06% in 2025 (58 of 63). At Levittown, the pass rate fell from 84.2% in 2023 to 67.14% in 2024 and was 70.71% in 2025. The 85.3% graduation rate and the federal figure of 95% employed a year after graduation cover the whole school, not single programs.
Before you enroll
- Practical nursing results depend on the campus: Levittown’s first-time NCLEX-PN pass rate was 67% in 2024 and 71% in 2025, against 87% to 92% at Medford. Ask the school about the current Levittown results before choosing a campus.
- Radiologic Technology is not an entry-level program. Applicants need an associate degree and a 75% HESI score, and there is one class a year at Levittown only.
- The computer programs have the weakest reported results: 58% placement for Web Application and 74–75% for Networking in 2023-24, against 100% for Radiologic Technology and Sonography.
- VA education benefits apply only to on-campus programs, so veterans cannot use them for the hybrid Radiologic Technology, Sonography and Web Application programs or the online billing diplomas. The school does not say whether students outside New York can enroll in its online programs.
- Hunter awards only clock-hour diplomas and certificates, no degrees. Anyone planning a college degree later should ask that college whether it will accept the hours.

The school says its two sites together have more than 40,000 square feet and over 30 classrooms. Both are commuter campuses with no student housing.
Externships and career help
Medical Assistant and Web Application end with required externships, and Practical Nursing, Radiologic Technology and Sonography include clinical hours. The career services office offers placement assistance, workshops, guest speakers, career fairs and mock interviews, helps arrange externship and clinical sites, and the school describes its help as lifetime support for graduates. Résumé and interview training is part of the course work.
What students say
On Niche, Hunter Business School is rated 3.66 out of 5 from 35 reviews, with an overall grade of B+ (checked October 2026). Reviewers most often praise supportive instructors who help outside class, short accelerated health programs, and helpful admissions, financial aid and career services staff. The main complaints are limited hands-on work and weak career help in the IT program and cost compared with job outcomes; older reviews from 2016 criticise equipment and instructors, and some from 2021 describe remote-learning problems. The ratings are split: 16 of the 35 are five-star and 7 are one-star. Read them with care: many reviews were posted in bursts (late 2016 to early 2017, early 2018 and early 2021, including two similar same-day reviews), and few have been posted since 2022.
