Who runs ICT: two institutions, seven campuses
Interactive College of Technology began in Athens, Georgia, in 1982 as Akers Computerized Learning Centers, according to its catalog. Interactive Learning Systems bought it in 1986, and it took its current name and moved to Chamblee in 1996. Today it is run as two institutions with separate catalogs: a Georgia and Kentucky institution with its main campus in Chamblee and affiliates in Gainesville, Morrow and Newport, and a Texas institution with its main campus in Pasadena and affiliates in North and Southwest Houston. Most of what ICT teaches is business and office training, offered at every campus. HVAC, commercial refrigeration and information technology are taught at only a few campuses, and every campus except Newport teaches VESL, English for the workplace.

Every AS degree is 72 semester credits, including 18 in general education, taken over at least five semesters; the Texas catalog puts that at 75 to 90 weeks, with a full-time pace of 24 credits per 30 weeks. ICT’s vocational programs include an externship, which the program pages put at 135 hours (ICT 299, 3 credits). The Office Technology AS can also be taken by distance education or hybrid delivery in Texas; IT and HVAC are on campus only. In Georgia and Kentucky, first-time students who live within 25 miles of a campus must attend on campus for their first semester.
What the main programs cover
HVAC/R Technology and HVAC Residential
The HVAC/R Technology diploma at Chamblee covers heating and air conditioning plus residential and commercial refrigeration, heat pumps and controls. HVAC Residential, at Newport and Pasadena, is the residential heating and air conditioning diploma. Both prepare students for the EPA 608 exam, which technicians need to handle refrigerants, and both end with a 135-hour externship with an employer. ICT says its HVAC programs are approved for VA education benefits. Kentucky has run both day and evening starts. In the latest federal count, Chamblee awarded 77 HVAC/R credentials.
Commercial Refrigeration
Commercial Refrigeration is ICT’s only HVAC or refrigeration associate degree and is taught only at Chamblee. Beyond the heating and cooling basics it covers commercial refrigeration equipment, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and refrigeration management, and it prepares students for the EPA 608 exam. As an AS it runs 72 semester credits, including 18 in general education, over at least five semesters. AS classes start three times a year, in January, May and August.
Accounting and business information systems
The accounting track teaches QuickBooks, with a course (BUS 131) aimed at Intuit’s QuickBooks certification, alongside Sage and Microsoft Office Specialist Word and Excel. In the Texas catalog the AS version runs 1,310 clock hours: 916 lecture, 259 lab and a 135-hour externship. Business Information Systems is built around Microsoft Office Specialist training in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook; its AS version is 1,390 clock hours. Classes typically meet Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 6 to 10 p.m.
Information Technology
The IT programs prepare students for CompTIA A+ (Core 1 and Core 2) and follow Microsoft certification pathways, with 135 hours of work-based learning. ICT is a CompTIA Certified Training Institute and a Microsoft-approved testing center, and initial certification vouchers are included in course materials. The Information Technologies Specialist diploma is not a beginner’s route: it requires at least six months of IT work experience. Both are taught on campus only, at Chamblee and Southwest Houston.
Medical Office Administration
Medical Office Administration trains for front-office healthcare work. It prepares students for the National Healthcareer Association’s Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) and Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) exams, adds Microsoft Office Specialist training, and includes American Heart Association CPR/First Aid and BLS and OSHA bloodborne-pathogens training. It ends with a 135-hour healthcare externship. The courses touch on insurance billing and coding, but the program does not prepare for a coding credential such as CPC or CBCS.
Cost: ask Admissions for the tuition schedule
ICT does not publish its tuition online. Both catalogs say the Tuition and Fee Schedule is a separate supplement that comes from Admissions, so ask for it, with the total for your program, before you enroll. The best public figures are the federal ones below, for a full-time year. ICT charges the same rate to in-state and out-of-state students; Niche shows Pasadena’s $10,970 “for both in-state and out-of-state”, per its federal data. Books, materials and lab or software charges are extra, though initial certification vouchers are included in materials. The application fee is $50 for a program, and Texas diploma students also pay a $100 Texas Workforce Commission administrative fee.

ICT takes federal student aid: Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Direct and PLUS loans and Federal Work-Study, plus institutional aid and payment plans. At Chamblee in 2023-24, 67% of undergraduates received Pell Grants and 48% took federal loans. Chamblee’s cohort default rate was 0% for FY2021 and FY2020. Veterans can use GI Bill benefits; ICT says its HVAC programs are VA-approved, and 43 Chamblee students used the Post-9/11 GI Bill. We found no named scholarships with published amounts.
Admissions and start dates
- An interview, in person or virtual, and proof of high school completion: a transcript, diploma, GED or notarized self-certification.
- The TABE test for applicants to occupational programs, and the CaMLA English test for non-native English speakers.
- AS degrees start three times a year: 6 January, 3 May and 26 August 2027 are the next dates in the Georgia/Kentucky catalog. Diploma start dates vary by program and campus, and VESL starts monthly.
- Day and evening classes; a typical schedule is Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 6 to 10 p.m.
Accreditation and graduation rates
The Council on Occupational Education (COE) accredits all seven campuses; the Chamblee campus has been accredited since 1989, and College Navigator lists its next review date as 31 December 2026. ICT’s home page carries a COE public notice that the Georgia and Kentucky campuses are applying for reaffirmation of accreditation. That is the routine renewal step, and we found no adverse action. State approval comes from Georgia’s Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission, the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary Education and, in Texas, the Texas Workforce Commission (diplomas) and a Certificate of Authorization from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (AS degrees). ICT lists no programmatic accreditation for any program.
At Chamblee, 37% of students who started in 2021-22 graduated within 150% of normal time (39% for the 2020-21 group), and 60% of full-time students who started in 2023 returned in fall 2024 (33% of part-time students), per College Navigator. Federal graduation rates shown on Niche for the other six campuses range from 23% at Pasadena to 41% at Morrow, with the cohort year not shown. ICT does not publish placement rates on its site that we could read, and none of its programs leads to a state licence with a published pass rate. We found no lawsuits, settlements or regulatory actions against ICT from 2023 to 2026.
Before you enroll
- Get the price in writing. ICT’s tuition schedule is not online; the federal figures (about $10,900 to $11,300 a year) leave out books, materials and lab charges.
- Check where your program is taught. HVAC is at Chamblee, Newport and Pasadena only; IT at Chamblee and Southwest Houston only; Commercial Refrigeration at Chamblee only; and Newport has no VESL.
- Fewer than half of students graduate within 150% of normal time: 37% at Chamblee and 23% to 41% at the other campuses in federal data, so ask your campus how many students in your program finish.
- COE accredits ICT as an institution, and ICT lists no programmatic accreditation for its programs. Whether a community college or university accepts ICT credits is up to that college, so ask it before counting on a transfer.
- Know what the credential leads to. Human Resource Management has no certification built in, and Medical Office Administration prepares for front-office exams (CMAA, CEHRS), not medical coding.

Every campus teaches accounting, business information systems, business management, human resource management and medical office administration, and every campus except Newport teaches VESL. The Morrow campus has moved to the Southlake Corporate Center from its former address on Southlake Parkway.
Career help
ICT has no student housing. It offers what it calls Lifetime Career Placement Support, with a Career Assistance Coordinator at each campus, and the externships put students with employers before they finish. ICT’s own site adds that employment is not guaranteed.
