Indiana’s statewide community college
Ivy Tech Community College is Indiana’s single statewide public community college. Its own locations page lists 38 sites, all in Indiana: full-service campuses in the larger cities and smaller satellite locations run by them. The college says it serves more than 200,000 students a year and awards 49% of the postsecondary credentials earned by Hoosiers (April 2025). It teaches more than 70 programs, from 5-credit certificates such as nurse aide to associate degrees, and many business, IT and health information programs can be taken fully online. Indiana residents pay $178.38 per credit hour, the same rate as in 2024-25 after the trustees froze tuition through 2026-27, and eligible residents can take many short certificates free through the state’s Workforce Ready Grant.
Career programs at Ivy Tech
Ivy Tech awards short-term certificates (CT), technical certificates (TC), Associate of Applied Science (AAS) career degrees and Associate of Science (AS) degrees; several health AS degrees, such as nursing and respiratory therapy, lead straight to licensing exams. The table covers the main career programs from Ivy Tech’s program pages (October 2026). Tuition estimates are credits times the 2026-27 in-state rate of $178.38, before the textbook fee and program fees; a dash means the source gave no figure.

Many programs are accredited in their own right: CODA for dental assisting and hygiene, CAAHEP for medical assisting, surgical technology, paramedic and sonography, CoARC for respiratory therapy, CAPTE for PTA, NAACLS for medical laboratory technology, JRCERT for medical imaging and radiation therapy, CAHIIM for health information technology, ATMAE for the automotive, diesel, HVAC, industrial, construction management and aviation maintenance programs, and the ACF Education Foundation for culinary arts. Two programs are not yet accredited: Occupational Therapy Assistant at Anderson has applied to ACOTE, and Veterinary Nursing at Madison is seeking initial CVTEA accreditation. Indianapolis runs GM ASEP and Toyota T-TEN manufacturer programs. Business, accounting, IT support, software development, data analytics, supply chain and health information programs can be completed 100% online.
What the main programs cover
Registered and practical nursing
The ASN is a four-semester Associate of Science of 69 to 73 credits combining nursing courses with clinical placements, and it is admitted selectively: applications open in set windows, 15 March to 15 May for fall, 15 August to 22 October for spring and 1 December to 1 February for summer, and not every campus admits each time. Practical Nursing is a 45-credit, three-semester technical certificate leading to the NCLEX-PN. Licensed practical nurses, CMA (AAMA) medical assistants, military medics and paramedics can enter the Transition to ASN, a three-semester track with day and evening options.
HVAC
HVAC students start with hands-on courses taught in person and can stop at a 21-credit certificate, a 31- to 32-credit technical certificate of about a year, or continue to the 60-credit AAS over four semesters. Along the way they can earn ESCO’s HVAC Excellence certifications in air conditioning, electrical, gas heat, heat pumps, light commercial refrigeration and low-pressure systems, plus Clean Air Act and Universal R-410A certifications and an OSHA 10 card. The program is accredited by ATMAE, and the two certificates are covered by the Workforce Ready Grant for eligible Indiana residents.
Electrician training: two routes
Ivy Tech’s electrician training sits inside two other programs. Students heading for construction wiring take the Electrical Specialist certificate inside Building Construction Technology, 32 credits or a 19-credit short version, which follows NCCER’s curriculum through Electrical levels 1 and 2 and Intermediate Electrical 1 and includes OSHA 10. Students heading for factory and plant work take Industrial Electrical Technology, a 34-credit technical certificate or 21-credit certificate in the Industrial Technology program, taught at 22 locations. Electrical Engineering Technology is a different thing: a transfer AS for engineering technicians, ABET-accredited at Indianapolis, Terre Haute and Fort Wayne.
Welding and machining
Welding Technology is a 34-credit technical certificate taken over three semesters, taught in person by AWS-certified instructors at 20 locations. Students who want a shorter route can take the 21-credit Structural Welding certificate or 6-credit AWS workforce certifications in pipe, SMAW, MIG and TIG welding. Machine Tool Technology teaches milling, turning and CNC toward NIMS credentials, as a 60-credit AAS, a 31-credit technical certificate or a 31-credit CNC Machinist certificate, mostly in person at 17 locations. Welding belongs to the ATMAE-accredited Industrial Technology program.
Aviation in Fort Wayne and Columbus
Aviation Maintenance Technology at Fort Wayne is an FAA-certificated program: a 64-credit AAS over four semesters with a concentration in airframe or powerplant, an accelerated 16-credit AAS for mechanics who already hold an FAA licence, and an 18.5-credit general certificate. Aviation Technology – Flight at Columbus pairs college courses with flight training at LIFT Academy: the 30-credit technical certificate covers the private pilot and instrument rating, and the 60-credit AAS adds commercial single- and multi-engine certificates. Flight fees are charged on top of tuition.
Automotive and diesel
Automotive Technology is taught in person only. The general AAS is 60 credits over five semesters, with a 34-credit service certificate and short certificates in electric and hybrid vehicles, maintenance and light repair, and light-duty diesel. Indianapolis also runs the GM ASEP (69 credits) and Toyota T-TEN (60 credits) manufacturer degrees and motorsports certificates, and Fort Wayne teaches auto body and collision repair with I-CAR training. Diesel Technology offers a 60-credit AAS taking six to eight semesters, a 34-credit heavy truck certificate and 18-credit certificates.
Tuition, frozen through 2026-27, and how students pay
Ivy Tech charges one tuition rate at every campus and the same rate online. The trustees set $178.38 per credit hour for Indiana residents in 2024-25 and, on 5 June 2025, froze it for 2025-26 and 2026-27. Students taking 12 or more credits pay a flat full-time rate instead.

On top of tuition, the Ivy+ Textbooks fee is $18.25 per credit hour in 2026-27 (up from $18 in 2025-26). Nursing and dental hygiene charge a $125 program fee each semester, and international students pay a $1,750 fee in fall and spring. The big exception to low costs is flight training: Aviation Technology – Flight adds $75,339 in flight fees to the AAS, for a published total of $84,312, and $36,131.50 to the technical certificate, for $40,767.50.
Ivy Tech takes federal aid through the FAFSA, including Pell Grants. Indiana’s Workforce Ready Grant (Next Level Jobs) pays tuition and mandatory fees for eligible technical certificates and certificates, among them HVAC, welding, industrial electrical, dental assisting, pharmacy technician, phlebotomy, EMT, CDL Plus and entrepreneurship. It is for Indiana residents who file the FAFSA and have a high school diploma but no college degree, and for 2026-27 first-time dependent students are not eligible. Veterans and their families can use VA chapters 30, 31, 33, 35 and 1606 and the Fry Scholarship, the Indiana Child of Disabled Veteran tuition waiver and the Indiana National Guard Supplemental Grant. Ivy Tech is a Purple Star institution, gives credit for military training through a military crosswalk and prior learning assessment, and has a veteran and military benefits specialist at each campus.
Open admission, selective health programs and 8-week classes
Ivy Tech has open admission: it says “you don’t need a certain test score, GPA, or class rank”, and there is no application fee or essay. Applications take about 7 to 10 business days to process. Many health programs admit separately and selectively, including nursing, dental hygiene (fall start only), therapeutic massage (windows 15 March to 15 May and 15 August to 15 October), diagnostic medical sonography (an ultrasound aptitude exam, one attempt), PTA, respiratory therapy, paramedic and surgical technology.
Many classes run in 8-week sessions, which start five times a year, in January, March, May or June, August and October. The Transition to ASN nursing track has day and evening options, and many programs offer a 100% online option.
Accreditation and results
Ivy Tech is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, which first accredited it on 24 February 1995. HLC’s 2018-19 reaffirmation review ended in the decision “Reaffirm Accreditation with Monitoring”; an assurance review on 18 July 2023 ended in “Accreditation Continued”, and the next reaffirmation is due in 2028-29. HLC counts one main and 19 branch campuses.
One program was placed on accreditor probation in 2025. ABFSE placed Mortuary Science on one-year probation in October 2025, citing assessment and recordkeeping, with 1 September 2026 as the date to fix them. We could not confirm the program’s status after that date (checked 7 October 2026).

Most campuses scored lower than in 2024; Indianapolis fell from 88.9% to 80.3% and Lafayette from 92.1% to 77.7%. Radiation Therapy at Bloomington reports that 87% of its 2021–2025 graduates passed the ARRT exam on the first attempt and that 100% found jobs. Medical Laboratory Technology reports three-year Board of Certification pass rates by location of 55% to 100%. We could not find practical nursing (NCLEX-PN) results and could not reach federal graduation-rate data for Ivy Tech when we checked.
Before you enroll
- Electrical Engineering Technology is a transfer degree for engineering technicians, not electrician training. Future electricians should look at the Electrical Specialist certificate in Building Construction Technology or Industrial Electrical Technology.
- Two programs are not yet accredited: Occupational Therapy Assistant (Anderson) has applied to ACOTE, and Veterinary Nursing (Madison) is seeking CVTEA accreditation. The nursing program page we read names no national nursing accreditor. Ask what each status means for your licensing exam.
- Mortuary Science was placed on ABFSE probation in October 2025 with a 1 September 2026 deadline. Ask Ivy Tech for its current accreditation status before you apply.
- CDL Plus is an 18-credit certificate inside Supply Chain Management. Its page says it prepares students for a career as a commercial driver, but the course list we saw shows logistics courses, and we could not confirm behind-the-wheel training or a CDL test.
- Out-of-state students pay $348.97 per credit hour, almost twice the in-state rate, and we could not confirm whether Ivy Tech’s online programs are open to students living in other states. Programs also vary by site: in December 2025 the state approved suspending the medical assisting certificate at one location and ending a baking and pastry degree at one location; neither location was named in the summary we read.
Where Ivy Tech teaches
These are the 38 locations on Ivy Tech’s locations page. Satellites are run by the campus named, and several teach only general courses and a few certificates. Ivy Tech’s system office shares the Indianapolis campus address. Greensburg, North Vernon, Seymour, Connersville, Crawfordsville and Frankfort are no longer on Ivy Tech’s list; Crawfordsville’s own page says it offers no degree or certificate programs and sends students to Lafayette.

Clinicals, externships and career help
Every nursing and allied health program includes clinical placements, and dental assisting and medical assisting include externships. Campuses have career coaching offices; at Muncie, for example, career coaching is on the second floor of the Fisher Building. On Niche, Ivy Tech’s system page shows 4.44 out of 5 from 505 reviews, but its eight campus pages, with 4,213 reviews between them, score lower: from 3.74 (Lake County, 594 reviews) to 3.96 (Columbus, 229), with Downtown Indianapolis at 3.81 from 1,470 (checked 7 October 2026). On the Downtown Indianapolis page, the largest, reviewers most often praise low tuition, professors who are willing to answer questions, and 8-week and online classes that fit around work. Complaints center on hard-to-get advising appointments and feeling uninformed about requirements, little campus life, scattered downtown buildings and weak career counseling. The campus pages are the larger sample, so treat the 4.44 with care. On the Downtown Indianapolis page we saw no burst of reviews, and the most recent were from September 2025.
