JCCC: Johnson County’s public community college
Johnson County Community College (JCCC) is a public two-year college in Johnson County, Kansas, on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro. It awards associate degrees and certificates in more than 80 programs, from transfer degrees to career programs in nursing, dental hygiene, emergency medical services and the building trades, and some business and computer credentials can be completed fully online. IPEDS counted 18,743 credit students in fall 2024, 71% of them part-time; the college says it serves about 36,000 credit and continuing-education students a year. Tuition depends on where students live, and Johnson County residents pay the lowest rate.
Career programs at JCCC’s two teaching sites
Almost all credit programs meet at the main campus in Overland Park. Practical Nursing, Respiratory Care labs and Neurodiagnostic Technology use the Olathe Health Education Center. Programmatic accreditation, as the catalog lists it, also covers ACBSP for Accounting, Business Administration and Marketing Management, ACF for Pastry/Baking and HIMSS for Health Information Systems. The 2026-27 catalog merged the Food and Beverage Management and Hotel & Lodging Management degrees into one Hospitality Management AAS and renamed Metal Fabrication/Welding as Welding Technology/Metal Fabrication.
Fully online options include the Business Administration, Computer-Aided Drafting and Design, Computer Support Specialist and Marketing Management degrees and the Cloud, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Digital Marketing, Health Information Systems, Medical Coding, Paralegal, Personal Trainer and Sales certificates.
What the main programs cover
Registered Nurse (ADN)
The AAS is 66 credits, with four semesters of nursing courses, after 14 credits of prerequisites: BIOL 144 (or BIOL 140 and 225), ENGL 121 or 119, MATH 171 or higher and PSYC 130, each with a C or better. Applicants also need a current Kansas CNA, unless they are already LPNs, and must attend an information session and meet a health-care counselor before applying. Admission is selective. Licensed practical nurses can enter through an LPN-to-RN bridge. Graduates sit the NCLEX-RN.
Practical Nursing (LPN)
Practical Nursing is taught at the Olathe Health Education Center, beside Olathe Medical Center, with classes and labs in its Healthcare Simulation Center. Students choose one of three tracks: a 9-month full-time track starting in August with 32 seats, an 11-month track starting in January with 24 seats, or a 14-month part-time evening and weekend track starting in June with 24 seats. Admission is selective, and the program is approved by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Graduates sit the NCLEX-PN for a practical nursing license.
Paramedic
The Paramedic certificate is 46 credits over five semesters, about 18 months. Applications are taken from February to April, and classes begin in July. Alongside classroom and lab work, students complete hospital clinical rotations and an advanced life support field internship. The program is accredited by CAAHEP/CoAEMSP, and graduates sit the National Registry paramedic exam. Students who want a degree can continue to the Emergency Medical Science AAS; the EMT and Emergency Medical Responder certificates are shorter options.
Electrical Technology
The certificate is 30 credits over two semesters on the Overland Park campus, and an AAS is available for students who continue. The program prepares students for the Kansas Standard Journeyman Electrician exam, which the catalog lists as a requirement for completing the program. Students also earn an OSHA 30 card. HVAC Technology and Plumbing Technology are separate certificates in the same building-trades area.
Plumbing Technology
Plumbing is a certificate only, 30 credits, with no associate degree. Students can finish full-time in two semesters or take evening classes over two years, which suits people already working. The capstone includes the ICC Journeyman Plumber exam, and every student completes a required internship (PLUM 280) before finishing. Classes are on the Overland Park campus, alongside the electrical, HVAC and welding programs.
Chef Apprenticeship
The Chef Apprenticeship AAS is 67 credits over about two and a half years. It is accredited by the American Culinary Federation and registered with the US Department of Labor, and apprentices complete 4,000 hours of paid kitchen work while taking classes. Apprentices must be at least 18. Students who want a certificate rather than a degree can take the Pastry/Baking certificate, and those aiming at hotel or restaurant management can take the Hospitality Management AAS.
Tuition and how students pay
JCCC’s Board of Trustees approved the 2026-27 budget in June 2026 with a $5-per-credit-hour increase for Johnson County residents, effective fall 2026. Rates depend on residency:

The $18 in fees covers student activities ($9), debt reduction ($5), parking and roads ($3) and sustainability ($1). Kansas rates require six consecutive months of Kansas residency before the semester starts, and the metro rate applies only to Missouri residents in ZIP codes beginning 640 or 641; other Missouri residents pay the out-of-state rate. JCCC publishes no separate online rate. College Navigator gives 2024-25 full-time tuition and fees of $2,424 a year in-district, $2,904 in-state and $5,688 out of state.
JCCC takes federal student aid. The Johnson County Post reported that the Financial Aid Office and the JCCC Foundation distributed more than $22 million in grants and scholarships in 2025-26.
Open admission, with selective health programs
JCCC is open-admission, but Registered Nurse, Practical Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Respiratory Care and Paramedic have their own selective application processes. The RN program needs prerequisite courses, a Kansas CNA and a counseling appointment before application; Paramedic takes applications from February to April for a July start; and the Paralegal certificate needs a prior degree or must be completed alongside the Liberal Arts AA.
Schedules vary by program: Practical Nursing has day tracks starting in August and January and an evening and weekend track starting in June, and Plumbing can be taken by day in two semesters or in the evening over two years.
Accreditation and results
JCCC has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 9 April 1975. HLC lists no sanctions, and the college’s next comprehensive evaluation is due in February 2028, in the 2027-28 reaffirmation cycle; JCCC says it follows HLC’s Open Pathway.

The college’s own figure for the class of 2026 is lower than the Board of Nursing’s 2025 rate; that class finished in May 2026, so the result may cover only part of the year.
Before you enroll
- JCCC has no general criminal justice degree. Its only criminal justice credential, the Police Academy certificate, is open only to officers already employed and sponsored by a police agency; other criminal justice courses count toward transfer degrees.
- JCCC teaches dental hygiene, not dental assisting. Dental Hygiene is a selective 79-credit degree, not a short certificate.
- Construction Management trains supervisors and estimators. Students who want to work in a trade should look at the electrical, HVAC, plumbing or welding certificates.
- Psychology and entrepreneurship are available only as transfer courses, with no JCCC credential.
- The lowest rate is for Johnson County residents. Students from elsewhere in Kansas pay $128 per credit hour, Missouri residents outside the 640 and 641 ZIP codes pay $250, and Kansas rates require six months of residency.

JCCC also runs a noncredit CDL driving range in Edgerton, which opened in October 2024, and other off-campus sites, including West Park Center in Overland Park. This page lists as campuses only the two sites confirmed to teach the credit programs described here.
Apprenticeships, clinicals and internships
Work experience is built into several programs: the 4,000-hour paid Chef Apprenticeship, the required Plumbing internship, two Hospitality Management internships, the Paramedic field internship, an optional Automotive internship, the Health Information Systems internship, and nursing clinicals. Dental Hygiene students work in the on-campus Dental Hygiene Clinic and the Oral Health on Wheels mobile unit.
