LAYC Career Academy

What Is It Known For?

The LAYC Career Academy opened its doors in Columbia Heights, Washington, D.C., during Fall 2012. More than 100 students now attend this school, which focuses on serving disconnected youth between ages 16 and 30.

Behind LAYCCA is the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC), a nationally recognized multicultural organization that serves low-income youth throughout the District of Columbia, Prince Georges’ County, and Montgomery County in Maryland. Each year, LAYC works with over 4,000 individuals to support academic achievement, encourage healthy behaviors, and guide young people toward successful adulthood.

At LAYCCA, students can pursue a college preparatory GED curriculum while earning college credits before graduation. This approach gives disconnected youth a real chance to rebuild their educational foundation and move forward with their lives.

Class Schedules

Classes run from 8:55 a.m. to 3 p.m. LAYC Career Academy uses a personalized learning model that blends direct instruction with independent work on online platforms.

The Medical Assistant Program splits into two parts: classroom instruction and externship experience. That hands-on component prepares you for real work environments.

LAYCCA currently pilots an alternative part-time schedule for those who must work during the day. Evening classes are not yet available, but the school continues adapting to student needs.

Is It a Good School?

Yes. In May 2019, the academy earned accreditation from the Middle States Association (MSA). MSA is a respected accrediting body for educational institutions across the region.

Acceptance Rate

LAYC Career Academy operates with open enrollment and maintains a 100% acceptance rate. It serves all eligible opportunity youth who apply. If you’re a D.C. resident aged 16 to 30 and currently disconnected from both school and work, you qualify.

How Much Does Tuition Cost?

As a public charter school in the District of Columbia, LAYC Career Academy offers free education to all eligible students aged 16 through 30. Because there are no tuition costs, the school does not maintain a net price calculator.
