Chilton County’s career tech center for high-school students
LeCroy Career Technical Center (LCTC) is one of the schools in Chilton County Schools. High-school students spend part of the school day at the center and the rest at their home high school, which awards their diploma. The center’s hours page lists two class sessions: 8:00 to 10:30 in the morning and 12:00 to 2:30 in the afternoon.
The building dates from the early 1960s, and the district has said it is no longer big enough. In June 2026 Superintendent Corey Clements told ABC 33/40 that the current center has a capacity of about 425 and enrollment is over 500. In October 2024 the district put the figure at about 420 students a year across 13 programs, ABC 33/40 reported. In May 2025 the superintendent cited waiting lists and equipment shortages when he announced a partnership with Jefferson State Community College for a new center.

What the main programs cover
Welding
The welding program is a two-year course built on American Welding Society (AWS) standards, and the school says most class time is spent welding. Students can earn AWS certification, though the page does not say which AWS tests are given. Completers qualify for entry-level work as a shop welder, welder’s helper or apprentice; the page lists fabricator, pipe fitter and boilermaker work as careers that need further training.
HVACR
HVACR is a two-year program aligned to NCCER modules, covering installation, service and repair of residential and commercial heating, air conditioning and refrigeration, with an emphasis on safety and EPA rules. It names the widest set of credentials at the center: OSHA 10, OSHA forklift, EPA 608 Type I to III and Universal, and NCCER Core and HVACR Levels I, II and III. EPA 608 is the federal certification needed to buy and handle refrigerants.
Electrical and Industrial Maintenance
This two-year program teaches electrical theory, tools and test equipment, and building and troubleshooting circuits, using NCCER Electrical Technologies 1 to 3. Students can earn OSHA 10, Arc Flash and NCCER Level 1. The school says completers qualify as an electrician’s helper; journeyman and industrial maintenance work need further education. It is not an electrical license.
Utility Line Worker
Utility Line Worker is open to 11th and 12th graders for one or two years. Students learn basic electricity, pole climbing and building power distribution assemblies. The program lists OSHA 10, NCCER Core and Power Line Worker, a Class B commercial driver’s license and first aid/CPR/AED, and names Southern Company and Central Alabama Electric Cooperative among its partners. Completers qualify for groundman work; becoming a journeyman lineman takes further training. Ask how many students complete the CDL Class B before graduating, since age and licensing rules apply.
Cosmetology
Cosmetology runs for two years and 1,500 clock hours, covering hair cutting, color, chemical texture, nails and skin care, with practice in a full-service student salon. After the 1,500 hours, students can apply for the Alabama cosmetology license exam, which has written and practical parts.
Health Science and Pharmacy
Health Science is a two-year program; second-year students do supervised clinicals at hospitals, nursing homes, doctors’ offices and clinics. It lists the Alabama Certified Nurse Assistant credential, a patient care technician certification from the National Healthcare Association, and first aid/CPR/AED. EKG and phlebotomy are taught but not listed as certifications. Pharmacy is a one-year program that lists a pharmacy technician certification exam without naming whether it is PTCB or ExCPT, so ask.
Automotive and Auto Body
Automotive Service Technology is a two-year program on the NATEF Maintenance and Light Repair model, listing ASE certification and NCCER forklift training. The program page does not say the program itself is ASE-accredited. Auto Body Repair follows ASE task lists for painting and refinishing and non-structural repair, and students who meet the requirements can earn I-CAR Painting and Refinishing certification.
Cost
We found no published tuition or program fees for LeCroy. The center is a Chilton County public school, funded in part by a county trade school tax of 3 mills that voters renewed in November 2024, Jefferson State reported. Before the vote the district said the tax raises about $750,000 a year and pays for programs at the center, ABC 33/40 reported. An earlier version of this page said out-of-county students pay $500 a semester; we could not find that fee on any current school or district page, so families from outside Chilton County should ask the school whether they can attend and what it costs. Ask also about costs for kits, uniforms, license exams and the CDL. Federal student aid does not apply because the center is a high school.
Who can enroll
The center serves students from all six Chilton County high schools: Chilton County, Isabella, Jemison, Maplesville, Thorsby and Verbena. Students sign up through their home high school’s counselor or the LCTC counselor office (205-280-2920). Utility Line Worker and STEM are for 11th and 12th graders; the other program pages do not state a grade range. The district has cited waiting lists, so a place in a given program is not guaranteed. We found no adult or evening classes.
Accreditation and results
The center’s website does not state an accreditation for the center itself, and we found no published credential pass rates, completion or placement figures. In spring 2024, 65 LeCroy students completed skid steer training and 23 a fiber optics class through Jefferson State’s free Skills for Success program, Business Alabama reported. Ask each program how many students earned its listed credentials last year.
A new center planned for 2028
Chilton County Schools broke ground on 29 June 2026 on a $40 million career and technical Innovation Center next to Jefferson State’s Clanton campus, on land the college donated. It will replace the current center, offer 13 career pathways, and give students dual-enrollment access to Jefferson State in fields such as welding and healthcare. The district hopes to open it in early 2028 and to grow enrollment toward 1,000, ABC 33/40 reported.
Before you enroll
- Adults cannot enroll. LeCroy is for Chilton County high-school students only; adults should look at Jefferson State Community College’s Clanton campus.
- LCTC awards no diploma or certificate of its own. Students graduate from their home high school, and industry credentials depend on the program and on passing each test.
- The 12 programs on the website differ from the 13 the district cited in 2024; Building and Construction has no description online, so ask what it covers and what it leads to.
- The electrical program leads to helper-level work and NCCER credentials, not an electrician’s license.
- The building is over capacity, and programs may move to the new Innovation Center when it opens, planned for early 2028.
