Metro Tech: Oklahoma City’s public career school district
Metro Technology Centers, known as Metro Tech, is one of Oklahoma’s CareerTech technology center districts: a public school district, funded partly by a district property tax, that runs career training rather than a regular high school or college. It serves the Oklahoma City, Millwood and Crooked Oak school districts. High school juniors and seniors from the district attend tuition-free alongside adults, who pay by the clock hour.
Training takes place on three campuses in Oklahoma City: Springlake for practical nursing, culinary, cosmetology and computer programs; South Bryant for automotive, construction trades and the peace officer academy; and the Aviation Career Campus for aircraft maintenance. Programs end in a Metro Tech certificate plus an industry certification or licence exam, not a degree. For 2026-27, adult cosmetology and barbering moved to 1,250-hour programs, and the 1,500-hour versions are in teach-out.
Full-time programs for 2026-27
The table lists the programs on the state’s 2026-27 approved list for Metro Tech. Many 960-hour programs take high school juniors and seniors as well as adults; nursing, radiologic technology, aviation maintenance and adult cosmetology and barbering are for adults.

Clock hours and weeks come from the state’s 2026-27 approved-program list; campuses and certifications come from the school’s program pages and its FY26 catalog. Some programs on the school’s site are for high school students only and are not in the table: Medical Office Specialist, Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Aviation Maintenance Foundations and the Biomedical Sciences, Computer Science and Pre-Engineering academies. Firefighter/EMT and Law Enforcement Officer Prep are not on the state’s 2026-27 postsecondary list, and Early Care and Education Master Teacher is in teach-out for returning students.
What the main programs cover
Practical Nursing
Admission to the first nursing course is selective, and the program also offers advanced-standing entry; applicants complete the Oklahoma Board of Nursing’s citizenship and status forms. The day cohort runs 11 months, August to June, Monday to Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The evening cohort runs 12 months, July to June, Monday to Thursday from 3 to 10 p.m. Classes are at the Health Careers Center on Springlake Drive. Graduates take the NCLEX-PN to become licensed practical nurses; the program’s recent results are under Accreditation and results below.
Aviation Maintenance Technician
The 1,920-hour program is built from three 640-hour blocks: Aerospace General, Airframe I and Powerplant I. It runs under FAA Part 147 and prepares adults for the FAA Airframe and Powerplant mechanic exams; along the way students earn AMA, AMP, AMG and AET certifications and OSHA 10. The day track meets Monday to Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the evening track from 3:30 to 10 p.m. High school students can start with the 960-hour Aviation Maintenance Foundations course at South Bryant, which feeds into it.
Radiologic Technologist
Metro Tech describes this as a two-year full-time certificate program. At 2,212 clock hours over 74 weeks on the state list, it is the longest program the school offers. JRCERT accredits it, and graduates are eligible for the ARRT registry exam. It awards a certificate, not an associate degree, and the program page publishes no exam pass, completion or job placement rates. Ask the school which building it is taught in and how clinical training is scheduled.
Basic Peace Officer Certification
This 700-hour, 18-week academy at the South Bryant Public Safety Academy leads to CLEET basic peace officer certification. Classes run on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Applicants must be at least 20 and hold a high school diploma or GED. They file a CLEET application and must pass a physician’s assessment, a physical agility test, fingerprinting and a background check, the POSSE exam and the MMPI psychological test. Self-pay students also take a drug test.
Cybersecurity Network Specialist
This 960-hour program at the Business & Technology Center on the Springlake campus works through Computer Repair I and II, Routing and Switching I and II, Information Assurance, Network Security, Secure E-Commerce, Cyber Forensics and Enterprise Security Management. Students prepare for four CompTIA exams: IT Fundamentals, A+, Network+ and Security+. Adults study alongside high school juniors and seniors; most 960-hour programs shared with high school students run a weekday morning session (7:25 to 10:30 a.m.) or afternoon session (11:25 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.).
Cosmetology and barbering
For 2026-27, adult cosmetology and barbering are 1,250-hour Adult Only programs of about 58 weeks; the earlier 1,500-hour Cosmetologist and Barber programs are in teach-out. Adult cosmetology meets in the evening, Monday to Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m., at the Cosmetology Center on the Springlake campus, and prepares students for the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology written and practical exams. Barbering prepares students for the barber licence. A separate 600-hour Master Instructor program prepares students for the instructor licence.
Tuition and how students pay
Adults pay tuition by the clock hour, in two residency tiers. The school’s current program pages carry no school year. They work out to $3.25 per clock hour in-state and $6.50 out-of-state for most programs, as on the Aviation Maintenance Technician page:

Practical Nursing is priced separately from the hourly rate. Books, supplies and exam fees are charged on top of tuition.
The FY26 (2025-26) catalog cost sheets, dated May and July 2025, show half those rates for most programs (Aviation Maintenance Technician was lower still) and call the tiers in-district and out-of-district: $1.625 per clock hour in-district and $3.25 out-of-district, so Automotive Service Technician was $1,560 or $3,120 in tuition. It is not clear whether tuition doubled for 2026-27 or the tiers were renamed, so confirm the 2026-27 rate that applies to you with the school’s Bursar before you budget.
High school juniors and seniors who live in the district attend tuition-free, and tuition waivers are available for students under 21 who attended high school in the district. Federal financial aid and VA education benefits are available to those who qualify, and the school has a net price calculator. Federal IPEDS data put the average net price at $4,561 a year (2024).
Under the Bursar’s refund policy, students who withdraw within the first five scheduled class days get all their tuition back. After that the refund is 75% up to a quarter of the scheduled hours, 50% up to half and 25% up to three quarters, with nothing after that. Books, supplies and fees are not refundable.
Open admission, with selective nursing and a screened police academy
Most programs have open admission. Practical Nursing admits selectively into the first nursing course, with day cohorts starting in August and evening cohorts in July. The peace officer academy screens applicants through CLEET’s requirements, set out above.
Most 960-hour programs that adults share with high school students run Monday to Friday in two daytime sessions, 7:25 to 10:30 a.m. or 11:25 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Evening options exist in aviation maintenance (Monday to Thursday), adult cosmetology (Monday to Thursday) and practical nursing. Metro Tech has no online full-time program; the online short courses on its site come from an outside provider, ed2go.
Accreditation and results
Metro Tech’s institutional accreditor is the Oklahoma State Board of Career and Technology Education, which the school says is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the accrediting body for Oklahoma’s technology centers. After an onsite evaluation in October 2025, the Board granted continued full postsecondary accreditation in 2026, for a term of up to five years. The school says it has an action plan addressing the accreditation quality standards; a virtual progress review is set for July 2028 and the next onsite evaluation for 2030-31.
Several programs carry their own approval. The FAA certifies Aviation Maintenance Technician under Part 147, JRCERT accredits Radiologic Technologist, CLEET accredits the peace officer academy and ASE accredits Automotive Service. Practical Nursing is approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing and has held ACEN accreditation since 1995, with its next review in Spring 2032. ACEN accredits the nursing program only, not the school as a whole.
Practical nursing graduates’ NCLEX-PN pass rate fell to 73.7% in 2025, about 13 points below Oklahoma’s 86.98%, per the program’s published results. It was above the state rate from 2021 to 2023 and slightly below it in 2024:

In 2025, 86.95% of practical nursing students completed the program within 200% of its length, counted from admission into the first nursing course, and 91.16% of graduates were employed. We found no published exam pass or job placement rates for the other programs, including aviation maintenance and radiologic technology.
School-wide, federal IPEDS data count 1,626 postsecondary students in 2024, 423 of them full-time, and a 35% graduation rate for first-time, full-time students finishing within normal time.

Before you enroll
- The practical nursing pass rate dropped to 73.7% in 2025, well below the state rate. Ask the program what has changed since.
- The school’s current program pages and its FY26 catalog give different hourly rates and different names for the tiers. Get the 2026-27 rate for your address in writing from the Bursar.
- Metro Tech awards certificates, not degrees. The catalog says some certifications may apply toward an associate degree at an Oklahoma community college but names no partner, so check with the college first.
- Several programs on the school’s site, including Medical Office Specialist, Introduction to Entrepreneurship and the STEM academies, are for high school students only. Accounting Associate and Legal Office Assistant, in the FY26 catalog, are not on the state’s 2026-27 approved list.
- There is no student housing and no online full-time program.
Three teaching campuses in Oklahoma City
Springlake (1900 Springlake Dr, 73111) is the main campus, with the Health Careers Center, the Business & Technology Center, the Cosmetology Center, the STEM Center and culinary. South Bryant (4901 S Bryant Ave, 73129) has the automotive, collision, carpentry and electrical shops and the Public Safety Academy. The Aviation Career Campus (5600 S MacArthur Blvd, 73179) is at OKC Will Rogers International Airport. The Downtown Business Campus in the Corporate Tower on N Robinson Ave offers training and consulting for employers, not full-time programs for students.
Child care and work-based learning
Metro Tech runs two early education centers, Early Education Center North in the Springlake area and Early Education Center South at 5201 S Bryant; ask the school whether students’ children can enroll and on what terms. Automotive Service Technician ends in a 60-hour work-based learning internship, and Medical Office Specialist includes a 30-hour internship. There are no residence halls.
