Montgomery Community College: a small public college in Troy, NC
Montgomery Community College (MCC) is one of North Carolina’s 58 public community colleges. The State Board of Education chartered it as Montgomery Technical Institute in September 1967; full-time students arrived in August 1968, the first graduates finished in June 1969, and it became Montgomery Technical College in 1983 and Montgomery Community College in 1987. It teaches on one campus in Troy, which also houses Montgomery County Early College.
Alongside nursing, dental and building-trades programs, MCC has programs few colleges offer, including gunsmithing, taxidermy, hunting and shooting sports management, and forestry. In fall 2026 it opened a Dental Hygiene program. It is not the same school as Montgomery College in Maryland or Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania.
Programs at Montgomery Community College
The college lists about 35 credit program areas, most with several awards, plus about 25 continuing-education areas. All are taught at the Troy campus, and 2026-27 tuition is the same $76 per credit for NC residents in every program.

Programmatic approval, as the college and federal data list it: CODA accredits Dental Assisting (since 2007) and gave Dental Hygiene initial accreditation on 5 February 2026, and the North Carolina Board of Nursing has fully approved the ADN program since May 2021. Continuing-education EMS courses are accredited by the North Carolina Office of EMS.
Other credit programs include Taxidermy, Hunting and Shooting Sports Management (hybrid or fully online), Forest Management Technology with a GIS certificate, Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy, Industrial Systems Technology, Mechatronics Engineering Technology, Social and Human Services and college transfer degrees. The current Business Administration page lists only an 18-hour certificate, and the computer options are 12-hour certificates; the Simulation and Game Development degree is finished at Stanly Community College.
What the main programs cover
Gunsmithing
Gunsmithing is taught in person, and the college says more than 70% of class time is lab work. Besides the 76-semester-hour AAS and the diploma, four certificates let students focus on one area: Basic Gunsmithing (17 hours, also run on weekends), Design and Repair (16), Gunsmithing Technology (18) and Refinishing (12). Classes run by day, evening or weekend. The 2023-24 catalog required a firearm-eligibility background check and listed course fees of $100 each for GSM 111 and GSM 120. Metal engraving and NRA-approved short gunsmithing courses run through continuing education.
Dental Hygiene
The first class of 20 started in fall 2026, after a CODA site visit in October 2025 and initial accreditation on 5 February 2026. Students practise in the Dental Sciences Education Clinic, which has 10 operatory chairs and treats patients from the community. Admission is limited to 20 students each fall, and the next cohort begins in fall 2027. The NC General Assembly provided $1.5 million to launch the program. Because it is new, it has no graduates or licensing-exam results yet.
Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing
The RN degree and the nine-month Practical Nursing diploma share limited-entry rules: applicants need Nurse Aide I listing, the TEAS entrance test ($65 in 2023-24) and a physical exam. The ADN program has had full approval from the North Carolina Board of Nursing since 28 May 2021, the month its first four graduates finished. Practical Nursing uses a blended day format with three to four days a week on campus. Both programs charged ATI program fees on top of tuition in 2023-24. Cohorts are small: 13 ADN and 5 PN graduates were pinned in 2025.
Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration
This is a day program. The 66-semester-hour AAS and the 38-hour diploma cover the trade as a whole, while three certificates split it into parts: Air Conditioning (17 hours), Heating (18) and Heat Pump (16). The campus has a dedicated Heat Pump Skills Center. Adults who want a shorter, noncredit route can take continuing-education HVAC instead. The program page names no certification exam, such as EPA 608 or NATE, so students who need one for a job should ask how the courses prepare for it.
Facility Maintenance Technology
Facility Maintenance Technology trains people to keep buildings running rather than to specialize in one trade. The 68-semester-hour AAS covers carpentry and finishes, plumbing, electrical work, masonry, HVAC, welding, machining, blueprint reading, building codes and OSHA safety, and students choose one of seven course groups within the degree. Four short certificates are also offered: Basic Carpentry (16 hours), Basic Plumbing (13), Basic Masonry (12) and Basic Horticulture (12), which suit students who need one skill for a maintenance job.
Tuition and how students pay
North Carolina sets one tuition rate for all its community colleges, and there is no in-district or county rate: students pay either the in-state or the out-of-state rate. For 2026-27 the rate stays at $76 per credit for NC residents, with a semester maximum at 16 credits.

The latest catalog we found, for 2023-24, listed general fees of about $105 a year for a full-time student (campus access, technology, activity and accident insurance), plus program fees such as the nursing ATI fees and some gunsmithing course fees. The college estimates textbooks at $500 to $1,200 a term.
MCC takes federal student aid and offers a tuition payment plan. The average net price for aided in-state students was $13,380 in 2023-24, according to College Navigator, which also counted 15 Post-9/11 GI Bill recipients that year, averaging $4,415. The college’s 2024-25 fact sheet reports more than $3 million in financial aid and nearly $150,000 in scholarships in 2023-24, with 107 endowed scholarships. Veterans can get credit for military training and have a dedicated point of contact.
Open admission, with limited entry for some programs
The college admits applicants openly. Some programs add their own steps, according to the 2023-24 catalog: ADN and Practical Nursing need Nurse Aide I listing, the TEAS and a physical exam; Dental Assisting needs biology competency and BLS CPR; BLET needs agency sponsorship, a criminal record check and a 10th-grade reading level; and Gunsmithing needs a firearm-eligibility background check. Dental Hygiene takes 20 students each fall.
Published schedules: HVAC is a day program; Electrical Systems degree and diploma are by day and its certificates by day or evening; BLET is in the evening; Gunsmithing runs by day, evening or weekend; Practical Nursing is a blended day program; and Criminal Justice Technology can be taken by day or fully online. High-school students can take college courses through Career and College Promise.
Accreditation and results
Montgomery Community College is accredited by The Commission on Colleges and Universities, the name the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) took on 1 September 2026, to award associate degrees. It was first accredited in 1978 and was reaffirmed in 2024, according to the college; the next fifth-year review is due in 2029. We found no sanction.

- Check that what you read is about the right school. Montgomery Community College in Troy, NC is often confused with Montgomery College in Maryland and Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania.
- Several program areas are short certificates only on the college’s current pages: Business Administration and Culinary Arts list 18-hour certificates, and the computer options are 12-hour certificates. The game development degree is completed at Stanly Community College.
- Automotive Systems Technology has no associate degree, only a diploma and a certificate.
- The college publishes no exam pass rates on its program pages, so ask the nursing, dental and BLET programs for their own recent exam results.
- Dental Hygiene is brand new: its first class started in fall 2026, so there are no graduate results yet.
One campus, no housing
Everything is taught on the Page Street campus in Troy, about 134,400 square feet of buildings on 153 acres in a rural area. There is no campus housing. Each program page names a Success Navigator adviser for students in that program, and Dental Hygiene students treat community patients in the on-campus clinic.

On Niche, Montgomery Community College is rated 3.68 out of 5 from 305 reviews, with an overall grade of C (checked 13 October 2026). Reviewers praise a simple, friendly college and a good opportunity for high-school students, and say they like the school. Complaints include no cafeteria for college students and a quiet, isolated social scene. The review count is high for a college of 1,184 students, and many reviews appear to come from Early College high-school students, so they may say less about the adult career programs.
