A public technical college in Utah County and the Heber Valley
Mountainland Technical College, known as MTECH, is a public college in the Utah System of Higher Education with its own Board of Trustees. It was founded in 1989 and was called Mountainland Applied Technology College until 2017, when Utah’s applied technology colleges became technical colleges. It teaches career programs only and awards MTECH Program Certificates, not degrees. A September 2025 update to the Utah Board of Higher Education counted 6,369 students, 28% of them still in high school, who attend tuition-free.
Its Payson campus opened in September 2025 and its Heber Valley campus in August 2026, giving it six campuses. Programs are grouped into five schools, including the Clyde School of Trades, named for Clyde Companies, and a School of Apprenticeships.
Programs at Mountainland’s six campuses
The college’s program index lists 43 programs, from CDL training of 4 to 7 weeks to four-year apprenticeships. The table shows the main ones; totals are tuition and fees from each program page (checked October 2026), and the pages do not say which tuition year they use.

The program pages show programmatic accreditation for two programs: Practical Nursing (ACEN) and Pharmacy Technician (ASHP). The program pages claim no programmatic accreditation for radiography, surgical technology or dental assisting. Smaller offerings include Limited X-Ray Technician, Sterile Processing Technician, Machining Technology, Automation Technology (PLCs, Fanuc robotics and fluid power), Web Programming and Development, iOS App Development, a new Data Technology program, and Master Hair Design and Master Barber at Heber Valley. Artisan Baking is a single 8-week course that earns a transcript of credit, not a certificate, and Civil Construction I is open only to Clyde Companies employees.
What the main programs cover
Practical Nursing
The program runs two semesters, 900 hours and 28 credits, and is taught only at Lehi, with a separate nursing building on Ashton Blvd. It admits up to 24 students a semester. Applicants must be 18 or older and hold a current CNA certificate and American Heart Association BLS card, submit a health form, and have a C or better in Anatomy with lab, Physiology with lab, and Human Growth and Development or Psychology. Applications open only in fixed windows: mid-May to late June for fall, and mid-October to mid-November for spring.
Radiography Technology
The program lasts 15 months, starting each August and ending in November of the following year, and includes more than 900 clinical hours at sites from Murray to Heber. Students apply in advance. The catch is the credential: the ARRT radiography exam requires a degree, and MTECH awards only certificates, so students need a degree from elsewhere. The program page lists Utah Valley University’s AAS in Healthcare Services as one route. Limited X-Ray Technician is a shorter 4- to 6-month option leading to ARRT limited-scope testing and a Utah licence.
HVACR Technician
This 18-month program, taught only at Orem, prepares students for RMGA, EPA 608, TRAC Pipe and five NATE exams. Work experience is built in: by the HVACR Electrical Essentials course students must be working part-time for an HVACR employer, and the job is also required for Basic Refrigeration Systems and Advanced Controls and Exit Skills. MTECH says it does not place students with employers and points them to its Student Job Board and Utah’s Department of Workforce Services.
Electrical and plumbing apprenticeships
These programs are the classroom part of a Utah apprenticeship. Electrical takes 720 hours over four years and prepares students for the DOPL journeyman exam, with a residential licence as an option; plumbing takes 576 classroom hours alongside 8,000 on-the-job hours, and students may test after level 4A and 6,000 hours. Only the first year meets in the daytime and is open to anyone. From the second year, classes are in the evening for apprentices employed and registered with DOPL through an employer. MTECH does not sponsor apprentices.
Commercial Driver’s License Class A
CDL training takes 4 to 7 weeks: the day cohort finishes in about 24 business days and the night cohort in about 36. It meets the federal entry-level driver training rules (49 CFR Part 380) and prepares students for the Utah Class A test, with Tanker and Doubles/Triples endorsements. Classes are at Lehi and at the Heber Valley campus, which opened in August 2026. Graduates earn an MTECH Program Certificate in Commercial Truck Driving alongside the state licence. MTECH’s 2025–2028 strategic plan calls for finding a better location for CDL training.
Tuition, fees and how students pay
For 2026-27, MTECH charges $125 per credit hour for credit programs and $2.10 per course hour for non-credit programs. The Utah Board of Higher Education approved the rate in March 2026. The college publishes one rate for all students, with no in-district or out-of-state differential. High school students pay no tuition, only fees and materials, until their high school class graduates; after that they pay the current rate.
Whole-program totals of tuition and fees on the program pages run from $474 (Artisan Baking) to $7,303 (Cosmetology); most certificates of a year or less cost under $5,000. Fees and materials may be due at different times from tuition. The college’s tuition and fees page has current figures.
Federal aid, including Pell Grants, is available for eligible programs. College Navigator reports no federal student loans at MTECH for 2023-24, and we could not confirm whether the college offers federal Direct Loans. The college says veterans assistance is available for many programs.
Admission is open, but some programs are capped
MTECH has open admission. Most programs require a satisfactory score on the college’s Entrance Assessment or other documents in its place. Several programs have their own limits: Practical Nursing takes 24 students a semester with prerequisites and fixed application windows; Radiography has an application and an August start; Advanced EMT requires an EMT certification and age 18; HVACR requires a job partway through; and the apprenticeships require an employer from the second year. Many other programs are open-entry, with several registration windows a year.
Schedules depend on the program. CDL runs day and night cohorts, Advanced EMT meets Tuesday to Thursday evenings, and Cosmetology students choose a fixed day or night schedule. Networking and Cybersecurity and Digital Marketing and Analytics are hybrid. No program is fully online.
Accreditation and results
Mountainland is accredited by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE), which has accredited it since 2006. In July 2024 the college posted a public notice that it was applying for reaffirmation, and its accreditation page lists it as accredited. Practical Nursing is accredited by ACEN, which last granted continuing accreditation, and Pharmacy Technician by ASHP.
The clearest outcome is nursing licensure. Utah Division of Professional Licensing data show MTECH’s Practical Nursing graduates passed the NCLEX-PN on the first attempt at a rate of 100% in 2023, 2024 and 2025, including 40 of 40 candidates in 2025. College Navigator reports a federal graduation rate of 84% for full-time, first-time students who started in 2021-22, counting those who finished within 150% of normal program time.
Program pages also show completion, placement and licensure percentages for each program, but they do not define how these are measured, so we do not repeat them here.
Before you enroll
- MTECH awards certificates, not degrees. That matters most for Radiography Technology: the ARRT exam requires a degree, which students must earn elsewhere, such as through Utah Valley University.
- The electrical and plumbing apprenticeships and the HVACR program require a job with an employer partway through, and MTECH does not find one for you.
- Many programs, including Practical Nursing, Radiography, Machining and most technology programs, are taught only at Lehi. Check where your program meets before choosing a campus.
- Surgical Technology prepares students for the NCCT TS-C exam, not the NBSTSA CST exam, and the program does not claim CAAHEP accreditation.
- Federal aid is mainly Pell Grants; College Navigator shows no federal loans. Plan to cover any gap from savings, work or other aid.
Six campuses: what each teaches
| Campus | Address | Main programs taught there |
|---|---|---|
| Lehi (main) | 2301 West Ashton Blvd, Lehi | Almost all programs; the only campus for Practical Nursing, radiography, machining and most technology programs |
| Orem | 1410 West 1250 South, Orem | HVACR (only here), welding, medical assistant, automation, apprenticeships |
| Spanish Fork | 693 West 1210 South, Spanish Fork | Cosmetology, nail technician, apprenticeships |
| Payson (opened September 2025) | 993 South 1950 West, Payson | Automotive, diesel, welding, automation, health programs, culinary, digital marketing |
| Provo | 125 North 100 West, Provo | Surgical technology, networking and cybersecurity, EMT and other health programs |
| Heber Valley (opened August 2026) | 977 West Riverhawk Road, Heber City | 17 programs, including CDL, automotive, diesel, welding, health, cosmetology and apprenticeships |
The Lehi, Orem and Spanish Fork campuses each have more than one building. MTECH’s 2025–2028 strategic plan, approved by its board in January 2026, calls for moving programs out of the Spanish Fork Main Building and improving or selling its Automotive Building, and for land banking in the Eagle Mountain–Saratoga Springs and Orem–Vineyard areas. None of these are campuses yet.
No housing, and limited job placement
MTECH has no student housing. Its HVACR program page says the college does not place students with employers and directs them to the MTECH Student Job Board and Utah’s Department of Workforce Services. Several programs build an externship into the course, including Pharmacy Technician, Medical Assistant, Sterile Processing and Web Programming and Development.
What students say
On Niche, Mountainland Technical College is rated 3.84 out of 5 from 62 reviews (checked 9 October 2026). Reviewers most often praise hands-on, career-focused training on real equipment, instructors with industry experience who care about students, and low cost with help applying for financial aid. The most common complaints are inconsistent administrative systems and poor communication, teaching quality that varies from one instructor to another, and a fast pace with strict attendance rules. The reviews cover the whole college rather than one campus, and we could not check whether they were invited by the school or posted in bursts, so treat them as a rough guide. We did not check Trustpilot or GradReports.
