A Rhode Island technical university on a quarter calendar
New England Institute of Technology, which calls itself New England Tech or NEIT, is a private nonprofit university with three campuses a few miles apart in East Greenwich and Warwick. It lists 59 programs, about half of them associate degrees taught on quarter terms that can be finished in about 18 months, with bachelor’s and master’s degrees layered on top. The health programs, most with their own accreditation, are at the main campus in East Greenwich; the plumbing, HVAC, electrical, welding, automotive and marine programs are at the two Warwick campuses. Most programs fall into two tuition bands for 2026-27, the same for every student: $18,540 a year for the trades, criminal justice and the Practical Nurse certificate, and $35,925 for most health, technology and design programs.
Programs at New England Tech’s three campuses
NEIT’s full program list has 59 entries, from the Practical Nurse certificate to master’s degrees. The table covers the main career programs; tuition is the 2026-27 full-time annual rate, and a dash means the school does not publish it in a comparable form. Students in any program should be ready to take some classes at another campus, according to most program pages.

Most health programs carry their own accreditation: ACEN for the Nursing AS and the Practical Nurse certificate, CoARC for Respiratory Care, CAAHEP for Surgical Technology and Paramedic Technology, NAACLS for Medical Laboratory Technician, CAPTE for the PTA degree, ACOTE for Occupational Therapy Assistant and the AVMA for Veterinary Technology. The plumbing, HVAC and electrical degrees prepare students for Rhode Island licensing but do not replace the apprenticeship years the state requires. Bachelor’s degrees in most fields follow on from the associate degree. A few programs are online, including the RN to BS in Nursing and a Criminal Justice BS.
What the main programs cover
Nursing AS (ADN)
Nursing students start clinical work in their first term, one to three days a week, at sites NEIT assigns anywhere in Rhode Island, so a car or a long commute may be needed. The course runs full time over six terms with no evening lectures at present. Entry depends on the Kaplan Nursing Entrance Exam, and science courses taken earlier count only if they are under three years old. Staying in the program requires at least a B- in each nursing, biology, math and English course and a cumulative GPA of 2.33.
Practical Nurse certificate
The practical nursing course is built around 1,500 hours, 900 of them in clinical placements and simulation, spread over 50 weeks of instruction in about 15 months, according to the program page. Like the RN program it has no evening lectures, so students need to be free in the daytime. Applicants take the same Kaplan entrance exam as for the Nursing AS but need a lower score, 64. Health programs also require a physical exam, immunizations, a TB test and a background check.
Surgical Technology
The program pairs a 160-hour simulation lab with 540 hours of clinical work, during which each student must log at least 120 cases. From term four, clinical days run Tuesday to Thursday, 6:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., which leaves little room for daytime jobs on those days. Every surgical technology lab and lecture course meets at East Greenwich, so students living near Warwick still commute there. The program prepares graduates for the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam.
Paramedic Technology
The paramedic degree begins with PAR 100, Basic Emergency Medical Care. Students who are not already licensed EMTs take NEIT’s own Basic EMT course and must hold an EMT licence by the third term, which is why the program runs nine terms for them instead of eight. Evening classes are available, unlike in the nursing and respiratory programs. The degree prepares students for the National Registry paramedic exam, and its accreditation comes from CAAHEP on CoAEMSP’s recommendation.
Video Game Design
The associate degree splits its time between art and code. Art courses run from 3D modeling I and II to texture and lighting; programming courses cover introductory and intermediate game programming and Unity I and II; a game studio and testing course brings the two together. Students who want more programming can ask about the Game Development and Simulation Programming BS, whose courses include Game Engines and 2D Game Engine and Tool Development.
Plumbing, HVAC and welding
The Warwick trade programs meet in day blocks of at least three hours, starting around 7:45 a.m., 11:25 a.m. or mid-afternoon, or about three evenings a week from 5:45 p.m. Plumbing and Heating includes OSHA construction safety training and a heating track aimed at the oil burner technician licence. HVAC includes a refrigeration technician certification course. Welding students work toward AWS SENSE Level 1, NIMS credentials and a SolidWorks welding certificate. NEIT’s trades pages state that the school does not guarantee employment.
Two tuition bands, 2026-27
New England Tech charges one flat annual rate for full-time study (12 to 19 credits a term), billed over three terms, and the rate is the same for Rhode Island residents and everyone else. Mandatory fees add about $3,000 a year: $300 administrative, $900 student and technology and $1,800 laboratory for full-time students. NEIT says tuition and fees are subject to an increase each 1 July.

The fee and six-term columns are our calculation at 2026-27 rates; with the July increases the real total will be higher, and books, tools, uniforms and clinical fees are extra. Courses outside the 12 to 19 credit range cost $700 a credit in higher-band programs and $500 in lower-band ones. The paramedic program has its own rate; check it with the school. College Navigator lists 2024-25 tuition and fees of $37,275.
Federal aid and a 0.0% default rate
NEIT takes part in federal student aid, and College Navigator reports a three-year cohort default rate of 0.0% for FY2021. Because tuition does not change with residency, the main lever on price is the program band, not where a student lives.
Admissions, schedules and evening classes
Nursing applicants take the Kaplan Nursing Entrance Exam, with 77 for automatic acceptance on the Nursing AS and 64 for the Practical Nurse certificate. Health programs add a physical exam, immunizations, a TB test and a background check, with fingerprinting before pediatric clinicals. Day technical classes meet in blocks of at least three hours, up to five days a week. Evening technical classes run about three nights a week from 5:45 p.m. for the trades and paramedic programs, but not for Nursing, Practical Nurse or Respiratory Care. Liberal arts courses run in the day, evening, on Saturdays and online.
Accreditation and published results
New England Tech has been accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) since 2005. After its last comprehensive evaluation, NECHE continued its accreditation in September 2023, and the next comprehensive evaluation is due in spring 2033. NECHE lists no probation, notice or monitoring.

Program pass rates are reported by NEIT on its program pages and catalog; we did not check them against licensing board reports. NEIT does not publish job placement rates for the trades. Our web searches in October 2026 found no lawsuits, settlements or regulatory actions against the school, but the search was limited.
Before you enroll
- Costs add up quickly. At 2026-27 rates, six terms of tuition alone come to about $71,850 in the health and technology band and $37,080 in the trades band, and rates can rise each July.
- Nursing AS completion has slipped: 66% of the 2022 cohort, 50% of the 2023 cohort and 55% of the 2024 cohort finished within six terms, below the program’s 60% benchmark, even though NCLEX-RN pass rates stayed above 80%.
- A trades degree is not a licence. Rhode Island plumbing graduates still need two more years as registered apprentices before the journeyperson exam, and HVAC graduates three; electrical students should ask how much of the state’s apprentice hours the degree counts toward.
- Architectural Engineering is an engineering technology degree, not a NAAB-accredited architecture degree, so it does not lead to an architect’s licence. The Interior Design BS requires an interior design associate degree that is not on NEIT’s current program list.
- Auto Collision Repair Technology is not on NEIT’s 2026-27 tuition table or its full program list, although another page of the school’s site still names it; ask before planning on it.
Housing and getting between campuses
Meltzer Hall, a residence hall opened in 2017, is on the East Greenwich campus. The three campuses are within about 5 miles of each other, and a free shuttle runs between them while classes are in session. RIPTA Route 16 serves East Greenwich and Route 20 serves Post Road. Health programs place students at clinical sites across Rhode Island and, for some programs, in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

On Niche, New England Institute of Technology has 3.93 out of 5 from 464 reviews and an overall grade of B- (checked 8 October 2026). Reviewers most often praise applied, industry-focused teaching, small classes and knowledgeable, approachable faculty who prepare them for specific careers. The most common complaints are the cost of tuition, disorganized billing and administration, and dorm conditions. We could not see when the reviews were written, so we could not check for bursts of reviews or reviews invited by the school, and we did not check Trustpilot or GradReports.
