Northeast Technical Institute: short career programs at three Maine campuses
Northeast Technical Institute (NTI) is a private, for-profit career school founded in 1995. It has three campuses in Maine: the main campus in Scarborough, a branch campus in Bangor and an extension campus in Auburn that serves the Lewiston-Auburn area. Truck-driving and HVAC/R students also train at two CDL yards and a separate HVAC/R shop.
NTI teaches eight programs in four areas: commercial truck driving (CDL-A and CDL-B), HVAC/R, healthcare (Clinical Medical Assistant I, Medical Billing & Coding and Phlebotomy Technician) and information technology (CyberSecurity and Systems Technology). None lasts longer than 34 weeks. Federal IPEDS figures shown on Niche count 74 students, all full-time.
Eight programs, from a six-week certificate to 34-week IT training
Lengths below are the clock hours and weeks in NTI’s 2026 Consumer Information Guide and cost sheets. The program pages give larger “course credit” counts for the same programs (66 rather than 45 for HVAC/R, for example). Costs are the 2026-27 cost-sheet figures; a dash means NTI’s website does not say.

Only Medical Billing & Coding, CyberSecurity and Systems Technology can be taken partly or fully remotely; the CDL, HVAC/R and clinical programs are taught in person. NTI’s FAQ still mentions a Network Administration & Design program, but its page did not load in October 2026 and it is not on NTI’s 2026 list of VA-approved programs, so it is not listed here.
What the main programs cover
CDL-A and CDL-B truck driving
The CDL-A course splits its 160 hours into 78 hours of classroom work, 38 hours of lab work and 44 hours behind the wheel. Full-time classes meet Monday to Thursday; the half-time option meets on Saturdays and Sundays. NTI is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, and the course meets the federal entry-level driver training rule before students take the Maine BMV Class A road test. An 8-hour hazardous materials endorsement course is available for an extra fee. The 80-hour CDL-B course follows the same training rule and starts every three weeks.
HVAC/R Technician
The HVAC/R Career Diploma runs 900 clock hours over 30 weeks and combines classroom theory with work in NTI’s shops in South Portland and Bangor. Its exam preparation covers the EPA Section 608 refrigerant handling certification, NORA certification, and introductory and advanced propane and natural gas credentials. New classes start every 10 weeks. The program is approved for VA education benefits.
Clinical Medical Assistant I
This 27-week Career Diploma (675 clock hours) combines classroom instruction, lab practice in clinical skills and an externship that NTI arranges through employer partners; the number of externship hours is not stated. Graduates are prepared to sit a National Healthcareer Association certification exam. New classes start every three weeks, and the program qualifies for federal financial aid. In NTI’s 2022-23 report, 69% of students graduated, the lowest rate among its programs that year.
Medical Billing & Coding
At 825 clock hours over 33 weeks, Medical Billing & Coding is NTI’s longest healthcare program, and students can take it in person or online. It prepares students for a National Healthcareer Association certification exam. Unlike the clinical programs, its program page describes no externship, so students who want workplace experience should ask whether NTI offers any. New classes start every three weeks, and the program is one of the eight NTI lists as approved for VA education benefits.
CyberSecurity and Systems Technology
Both IT programs are 850 clock hours over 34 weeks, start every eight weeks and are taught by remote learning with live and recorded lectures. Systems Technology is the IT support track: CompTIA ITF+, A+, Network+, Security+ and CySA+, plus Windows Client and Windows Server 2019. CyberSecurity adds hands-on hardware work and preparation for the Certified Ethical Hacker exam and Microsoft security and compliance certifications. NTI does not name the credential either program awards.
Phlebotomy Technician
The Phlebotomy Technician Career Certificate is about six weeks and 11 credits long, although the program page header says students graduate in two months. Training moves from classroom and lab instruction in blood collection to clinical practice and an externship, and the program prepares students for the American Medical Technologists Registered Phlebotomy Technician exam. Classes start every five weeks, and applicants have an admissions interview before any discussion of financial aid.
2026-27 costs and how students pay
NTI charges one price per program, with no in-state or out-of-state rates, and says programs cost from $2,895 to $18,495. Each program is shorter than an academic year, so the figures below are for the whole program, from the cost-of-attendance sheets on NTI’s consumer information page. The total direct cost also includes each sheet’s “initial indirect” costs ($495 for HVAC/R, $515 for Medical Billing & Coding, $1,574 for CyberSecurity and $1,181 for Systems Technology), and the off-campus figure adds a living allowance of $2,083 a month.

NTI’s August 2026 cost sheets do not cover CDL-A, CDL-B or Phlebotomy Technician, so confirm those prices with the school before you budget. The 2026 Consumer Information Guide says the $100 registration fee becomes nonrefundable after the cancellation period. NTI’s net price calculator estimates costs after grants.
NTI takes federal student aid: Pell Grants and Direct Stafford and PLUS loans, depending on the program. CDL-B is not yet eligible for federal aid, and NTI offers a short-term payment plan for it. Maine’s FAME state grants and WIOA workforce funding can also apply, according to NTI’s listing on the state’s training-provider list. All eight programs are approved for VA education benefits, and NTI publishes a Principles of Excellence page for veterans. Other help includes in-house scholarships, a PathStone grant for farmworkers and a CDL scholarship from the John Austin foundation, whose amount differs between NTI’s own pages.
An admissions interview, and new classes every few weeks
Applicants have an admissions interview before financial aid is discussed. New classes start often: every three weeks for CDL, Clinical Medical Assistant I and Medical Billing & Coding, every five weeks for Phlebotomy Technician, every eight weeks for CyberSecurity and Systems Technology, and every 10 weeks for HVAC/R. CDL students choose full-time weekday classes or half-time weekend classes.
Accreditation and results
NTI is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE), which first accredited the Scarborough and Bangor campuses in September 2010, and it is licensed by the Maine Department of Education and the Maine Secretary of State. NTI is applying for reaffirmation of its accreditation and invites third-party comments to COE. No COE action on NTI appears in the commission’s published actions from June to October 2026, so we could not confirm a reaffirmation decision. We found no lawsuits, settlements or regulatory actions against NTI from 2023 to 2026 (searched October 2026).
For 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025, NTI reports a 90% graduation rate and 86% of graduates placed in jobs in their field, averaged across all campuses, on its home page. It has not published a program breakdown for that year.
Its 2022-23 completion, placement and licensure report to COE, the most recent we found with program and campus figures, is below. “Licensure” for CDL means passing the state CDL test. COE’s minimums are 60% for completion and 70% for placement and licensure. NTI does not publish how many students each rate covers, and some programs are small.

Before you enroll
- The August 2026 cost sheets cover five programs only. Prices for CDL-A, CDL-B and Phlebotomy Technician are not on them, so get the current price in writing.
- CDL-B is not eligible for federal aid, and NTI’s pages give two different amounts for its CDL scholarship.
- NTI is applying for reaffirmation of its COE accreditation, and we found no COE decision in the commission’s notices from June to October 2026.
- Clinical Medical Assistant I graduated 69% of students in 2022-23, and 75% of graduates were placed in the field. NTI does not give cohort sizes, so the 100% rates for several programs may rest on very few students.
- NTI’s website does not say which healthcare and CyberSecurity programs run at each campus. Ask which campus you would attend and where any externship would be.

The South Portland shop and the two CDL yards are teaching sites that NTI calls extended classrooms; they are not separate campuses. NTI lists the South Portland shop under Scarborough and the Hampden yard under Bangor.
No housing; job placement help
NTI has no student housing; its cost sheets show no housing cost in the on-campus budget. The school offers job placement assistance and arranges Clinical Medical Assistant I externships through employer partners; Phlebotomy Technician also includes an externship, but its FAQ says it cannot guarantee employment.
