A public Florida college, renamed in 2024
Tallahassee State College is a public college in the Florida College System with teaching sites in Leon, Gadsden and Wakulla counties. The Florida Legislature founded it in 1966 as Tallahassee Junior College, and it was Tallahassee Community College from 1970 until 1 July 2024, when Senate Bill 522 renamed it because it now awards bachelor’s degrees. Besides the A.A. transfer degree, the college runs a large set of career programs: a law enforcement academy in Havana, a health center with a simulation hospital, a welding and electrical training center, a Class A CDL school, and short health and trade certificates in Quincy and Crawfordville. Its RN degree is on Florida Board of Nursing probation.
Career programs across TSC’s eight teaching sites
TSC lists about 120 credentials. Career certificates are counted in clock hours and priced per clock hour; A.S. degrees and college credit certificates are counted in semester credits. The table shows the main career programs from TSC’s program inventory and program pages (October 2026); a dash means the source gave no figure. Prices are the college’s own published figures.

TSC also teaches cybersecurity, networking, programming, graphic and web design, drafting, building construction management, paralegal, criminal justice, accounting, supply chain management and early childhood education as A.S. degrees and shorter credit certificates at the Main Campus. Apprenticeships in electrical, HVAC, plumbing and pipefitting are career certificates that need a sponsoring employer.
What the main programs cover
Nursing, from LPN to RN-to-BSN
TSC’s nursing programs run from practical nursing to the RN-to-BSN. The new Licensed Practical Nurse certificate takes 1,350 clock hours at the Wakulla Center and clinical sites, and gives advanced placement to patient care technicians, medical assistants and active Florida CNAs. The Nursing (R.N.) A.S. is 72 credits on a fixed weekday schedule, admitted by HESI score and points, with an LPN-to-RN bridge for Florida-licensed LPNs. Licensed RNs can finish the online RN-to-BSN at their own pace within four years of starting the nursing core.
Dental hygiene and dental assisting
The two dental programs are the only health programs taught at the Main Campus. Dental Assisting Technology and Management is a 50-credit diploma that prepares students for the DANB exam, and TSC presents it as the first step toward Dental Hygiene. The hygiene A.S. is 88 credits over five semesters, in person and full-time on day schedules, with one fall intake of 30 students. Both are accredited by CODA. Hygiene is a limited-access program with a single fall intake, so ask the college for its application deadline.
Surgical technology and sterile processing
TSC groups its operating-room programs as Surgical Services at the Ghazvini Center. The 64-credit Surgical Technology A.S. admits one class a year, alternating between fall and spring, and runs on day schedules; it is CAAHEP-accredited and reports its results through ARC/STSA. Students who want a shorter route can take the 49-credit Surgical Technology Specialist certificate, the 30-credit Central Sterile Process certificate or the 24-credit Endoscopy Technician certificate. The program page still announces a class for fall 2024, so check the next start date.
Welding and electrical at the AMTC
The Kim B. Williams Advanced Manufacturing Training Center teaches TSC’s two main shop programs. Welding Technology is a 1,050-hour career certificate built around AWS shielded metal arc welding, with gas metal arc or flux-cored arc welding as the second process, plus OSHA-10 safety training; applicants must be 18 with a diploma or GED. Introduction to Electrical is a 350-hour course aimed at the IEC Residential Wireman credential. Those who go on to the Electrical Apprenticeship need a sponsoring employer.
Law enforcement and corrections academies
The Florida Public Safety Institute in Havana runs the Pat Thomas Law Enforcement Academy. Its basic recruit program is 770 hours, about six months, mainly weekday classes with some evenings, and it starts about twice a year (5 January and 6 July 2027 are the next listed dates). Correctional Officer training is 420 hours, and graduates must pass the State Officer Certification Exam and be hired by an agency before they are certified. Trainees can stay on site in single rooms for $26 a night.
Commercial driving
TSC’s Transportation and Logistics Center of Excellence teaches the Commercial Vehicle Driving career certificate for the Florida Class A CDL. Because the center is both an FMCSA-registered training provider and a state third-party administrator, students can take the CDL skills test where they train, for $325 including one retake and $75 for each further retake. Through Rebuild Florida, eligible residents can train free and get help finding work afterward.
Tuition for 2026-27 and how students pay
Florida public colleges have no in-district rate, only resident and non-resident prices. TSC’s 2026-27 operating budget, in the board’s June 2026 packet, was built with no increase to tuition and non-course-related fees, so the rates below match the ones TSC published for 2023-24:
| 2026-27, per credit hour | Florida resident | Non-resident |
|---|---|---|
| Lower division (A.A., A.S., college credit certificates) | $100.83 | $387.27 |
| Upper division (bachelor’s degrees) | $128.51 | $486.49 |
| Career certificates, per clock hour | $2.67 | $10.68 |
A full-time year of 30 lower-division credits comes to $3,024.90 for a Florida resident (our arithmetic), before books, lab fees and living costs. Several programs publish their own totals: RN-to-BSN $12,930 excluding textbooks, Radiologic Technology about $10,900, Dental Hygiene about $17,200 for residents and $42,400 for non-residents, Licensed Practical Nurse $3,604.50, Welding $2,802.45 and Introduction to Electrical $1,899. Niche puts the average net price at $8,209 a year.
TSC takes federal financial aid, and its program finder marks eligible programs. Eligible Florida residents can take Commercial Vehicle Driving, Construction Technologies and drone training free through Rebuild Florida, and the college says the law enforcement academy is fully fundable by available scholarships. TSC Foundation scholarships are listed on an online portal. Veterans’ benefits are handled by the veterans office in the CT Building, room 206, on the Main Campus.
In July 2026 the college proposed a $30 application fee and a $10 official-transcript fee for its August board meeting, with dual-enrollment students and applicants in financial need exempt; we could not confirm whether the board adopted them.
Open admission, with limited-access health programs
TSC is open admission for the A.A., most A.S. degrees and most certificates. Health programs are limited access, with their own applications, HESI scores or points and fixed seats: Nursing, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Care (24 seats), Dental Hygiene (30 seats), Surgical Technology (one class a year), Sonography, Medical Assisting Advanced, Paramedic and the LPN program, which takes no late applications. The RN-to-BSN requires an RN licence.
- Health program deadlines: 15 September 2026 for spring 2027, and 14 May 2027 for fall 2027.
- Nursing runs on weekdays, 8 am to 5 pm. Radiography, Surgical Technology and Dental Hygiene are full-time day programs; Respiratory Care has some clinicals after 5 pm; EMT has evening sections.
- The law enforcement academy starts about twice a year and runs on weekdays with some evenings.
Accreditation and results
TSC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges and Universities, the name SACSCOC took on 1 September 2026, to award associate and bachelor’s degrees. The accreditor says the rename does not change any member’s status. TSC has been accredited since 1967, and an August 2025 board memo says its last ten-year reaffirmation was in June 2025.
Program accreditors named by the college are ACEN (nursing A.S. and RN-to-BSN), CODA (dental hygiene and dental assisting), CoARC (respiratory care, through July 2032) and CAAHEP (surgical technology and paramedic). The law enforcement, corrections and probation academies are approved by Florida’s Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, and firefighter training by the state Bureau of Fire Standards and Training.
| Measure | Result | Cohort and source |
|---|---|---|
| NCLEX-RN, first-time pass (ADN) | 71.7% (Fall 2024); 69.89% (Fall 2025) | TSC healthcare page; program on Florida Board of Nursing probation |
| Surgical Technology | 60% completion, 75% exam pass, 100% employment | December 2023 cohort; TSC program page |
| Graduation rate | 38% | Federal data as shown by Niche, checked 7 October 2026; cohort year not shown |
| Employed one year after graduating | 93% | Federal data as shown by Niche, checked 7 October 2026 |
| Median earnings | $42,671, five years after entry or graduation | Scorecard data as shown by Niche, checked 7 October 2026 |
TSC does not publish pass rates for radiography, paramedic, dental, CDL or the law enforcement and corrections academies on the pages we checked. The practical nursing program has no NCLEX-PN results yet, because its first class started in fall 2026.
Before you enroll
- The RN degree is on Florida Board of Nursing probation. First-time NCLEX-RN pass rates were 71.7% for Fall 2024 and 69.89% for Fall 2025, and ACEN has granted continuing accreditation with conditions. The college says the program remains fully accredited; ask what has changed and how the latest cohort is doing before you apply.
- The BSN is not a way to become a nurse. It is an online RN-to-BSN for people who already hold an RN licence. TSC has no pre-licensure bachelor’s in nursing.
- The self-paced online courses sold under TSC’s name through partner sites (graphic design with Photoshop, CNC machinist, welder technician and electrical technician) are third-party non-credit courses that award only a certificate of completion, and the real estate and PMP prep courses are non-credit partner offerings; none of them is a TSC credential. TSC’s own programs in those fields are the ones described above.
- Several subjects you may see in TSC’s catalog, including art, communications, psychology, finance, marketing and hospitality, are A.A. transfer tracks with no career credential of their own.
- TSC’s list of programmatic accreditations names no accreditor for Radiologic Technology or Diagnostic Medical Sonography. If you need a programmatically accredited imaging program for a job or registry exam, ask the college about status before applying.
No housing, except at the academy
TSC does not offer on-campus housing. The one exception is the Florida Public Safety Institute, where academy trainees can rent single rooms for $26 a night. We found no description of a college-wide career office; career help is built into the programs: workforce certificates include industry credentials (AWS, IEC, OSHA-10, CCMA, CPT, CET, CPCT), CDL students test on site, Rebuild Florida trainees get job-placement help, and there are bridges from PCT, CMA and CNA into practical nursing, from LPN to RN, and from Paramedic to the EMS Technology A.S.
What students say
On Niche, Tallahassee State College averages 3.95 out of 5 from 1,535 reviews, with an overall grade of B- (checked 7 October 2026). Reviewers most often praise supportive, approachable professors and small classes, preparation for transfer, especially to Florida State University, a clean and safe campus, and low cost. The most common complaints are poor communication between offices and confusing administrative processes, limited mental-health services, few campus events, and a weak experience in online courses. These are college-wide reviews, not reviews of a particular program; we could not check whether they were invited or posted in bursts.
