A short-course healthcare school in Hampton Roads
Tidewater Medical Training (TMT) is a small private school that trains nurse aides, phlebotomists, EKG technicians, medical assistants and billing staff at two campuses, in Hampton on the Peninsula and in Virginia Beach on the Southside. It does not award degrees or diplomas. Instead it sells short courses, from a four-hour CPR class to a 15-week clinical medical assistant course, and each one prepares students for an outside exam: the Virginia nurse-aide certification exam, a National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification, a Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) exam or an American Red Cross card.
Four of the courses (phlebotomy, EKG, clinical medical assistant, and billing and coding) mix online coursework with classroom or lab sessions, and a new course may start every week or two across the two campuses, according to the school. Prices are one flat total per course, the same at both campuses.
Courses, hours and where they run
All TMT programs are non-degree courses. The table lists each course’s published hours and its posted total as of October 2026, which includes registration, books, supplies, the background check and BLS where they apply; exam fees are always extra.

Only two courses include time in a healthcare setting: the nurse aide course has 40 supervised clinical hours, and Clinical Medical Assistant has a 40-hour externship. Phlebotomy, EKG and Billing and Coding combine online study with classroom or lab sessions and list no externship, and the administrative and rhythm analysis courses are online. The BLS class is a required add-on for the nurse aide, phlebotomy, EKG and clinical medical assistant courses.
What the main programs cover
Nurse Aide (CNA)
The 140-hour course (NA1000) is built to the Virginia Board of Nursing’s nurse-aide requirements: 100 hours of classroom teaching and skills-lab practice, then 40 clinical hours under an instructor’s supervision. The school does not name the clinical sites, and students wear white scrubs there. Day and evening sections at each campus take about six to eight weeks on the 2027 schedule. Entry needs a high-school diploma, GED, college transcripts or the school’s eligibility exam, no barrier crimes, a TB test, COVID vaccination and hepatitis B vaccination or a signed declination. The school says students take the state exam at TMT.
Clinical Medical Assistant
This 142-hour hybrid course (C6000) combines 63 hours of online study, 39 hours in the classroom and lab, and a 40-hour externship. Classes meet once a week for about 15 weeks, in day or evening sections. The course covers phlebotomy, EKG, immunizations, charting, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and HIPAA, and it prepares students for the NHA’s Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam. The school does not say who arranges the externship. Students need a TB test, hepatitis B vaccination or a declination, and a computer or tablet with internet access.
Phlebotomy Technician
The 70-hour course (PH3000) is split between 35 hours online and 35 hours of classroom and lab work, where students build skill through repeated venipuncture. The school lists no externship and publishes no minimum number of successful draws. Most sections take about six weeks, while the Virginia Beach day section runs about nine. Graduates are prepared for the NHA’s Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. Applicants need a diploma or GED, a TB test and hepatitis B vaccination or a declination.
EKG Technician and rhythm analysis
EKG Technician (E5000) is a six-week hybrid course of 70 hours, half online and half in the classroom and lab, preparing students for the NHA’s Certified EKG Technician (CET) exam. It has no externship. Students who finish it can go on to the 15-hour online Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician course (E5500), a three-week intensive that prepares for CCI’s CRAT exam. The 2027 schedule lists seven EKG sections across the two campuses and six online rhythm analysis sections.
Medical Billing and Coding
The 120-hour course (B7000) runs in the evening for about 14 to 15 weeks, with 75 hours online and 45 in the classroom. Students learn CPT and ICD-10 coding and how to complete CMS-1500 claim forms, and the course prepares for the NHA’s Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam. The school does not mention the AAPC’s Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam. There is no externship, and students must buy their own coding manuals and have a computer or tablet with internet access. Six evening sections are scheduled in 2027.
Administrative Medical Assistant
This 91-hour course (A6500) is taught entirely online over 14 to 15 weeks, with an in-person orientation listed on the 2027 schedule. It trains front-office staff and prepares students for the NHA’s Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam. There are no clinical or externship hours. Applicants need a high-school diploma or GED and a computer or tablet with internet access. Three sections are scheduled in 2027.
What each course costs and how students pay
TMT charges one flat price per course, with no difference between campuses or between online and in-person study. These are the amounts posted on the school’s tuition and fees page in October 2026; the page carries no effective date, and the 2027 schedule says fees may change.

Certification exam fees are not included. The only exam fees the school publishes are $125 for the NHA’s electronic health records exam and $175 for CCI’s CRAT exam, which is paid to CCI. Billing and coding students also buy coding manuals costing about $250, and the rhythm analysis books fee is waived for students who finished TMT’s EKG course within the past nine months. The tuition page also lists an online Electronic Health Records course at $995.
Registration, books, supplies, the background check and BLS are due when a student registers. The rest of the tuition is paid in weekly installments for the nurse aide, phlebotomy, EKG and rhythm analysis courses, or in seven installments for the clinical medical assistant, billing and coding, administrative medical assistant and electronic health records courses, and must be paid in full by graduation. TMT takes cash, money orders, Visa and Mastercard.
TMT does not take federal student aid and offers no loans or financing. Its FAQ says students have paid with help from local government agencies such as DHS and Opportunity Inc., MyCAA for military spouses, community organizations and employers. The school’s site does not mention GI Bill benefits, and it publishes no scholarships.
Admissions and class times
The school’s course pages ask for a high-school diploma or GED and no felony convictions, and BLS has no entrance requirements; the nurse aide course adds the health and background requirements above. The schedules show day and evening classes at both campuses and no weekend classes. In 2027 the school lists six day and three evening nurse aide starts at each campus, six phlebotomy and six clinical medical assistant sections across both campuses, and three online administrative sections. Students wear scrubs in class.
State approval, accreditation and results
The school says it is certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) to operate in Virginia. That is a state certificate to operate, not accreditation, and the school has no institutional accreditor. Its nurse aide course is approved under the Virginia Board of Nursing, which regulates nurse-aide training; the medical assistant, phlebotomy, EKG and coding courses lead to national certification exams instead. The Board’s case decisions page listed no action against TMT when checked in October 2026.
TMT publishes no completion, job placement or certification pass rates. The Virginia Board of Nursing posts nurse-aide exam pass rates for each approved program on its testing pass rates page, so applicants can look for TMT’s results there.
Before you enroll
- These are short non-degree courses from a school with no institutional accreditor. With no federal aid or loans, students pay the posted totals themselves or through outside agencies or employers.
- Phlebotomy, EKG and Billing and Coding list no externship. Only the nurse aide and clinical medical assistant courses include time in a healthcare setting before the certification exam.
- The $100 registration fee is non-refundable, and the school’s site shows no refund policy, so ask for one in writing before paying.
- The online Electronic Health Records course on the tuition page does not appear on the 2026 or 2027 class schedules. Ask whether it still runs before planning around it.
- Exam fees come on top of every posted total. Ask the school what each NHA exam and the Virginia nurse-aide exam will cost.

Both campuses are on Hampton Roads Transit routes: Route 118 near Hampton and Route 27 near Virginia Beach. The school’s “Southside” page is an admissions page for students from Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Suffolk, not a separate campus. The administrative and rhythm analysis courses are online and not tied to either campus.
Job help: employer logos, no placement rate
TMT says it works with local healthcare agencies to help students find jobs and funding, but it names no partners. Its partnerships page shows logos of employers that have hired graduates, including CHKD, Bon Secours, Sentara CarePlex, Riverside Regional Medical Center and the Hampton VA, and states that the school has no affiliation with them. There is no student housing.
