UAF CTC: the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ career college

UAF Community and Technical College (CTC) is the community-college unit of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a public university governed by the University of Alaska Board of Regents. It is not a separate institution, so its accreditation and federal aid come through UAF. The college says it offers more than 50 certificate and degree programs, from short occupational endorsements to associate degrees, taught at five sites in Fairbanks and, for business, accounting and early childhood education, fully online. The University of Alaska counted 2,166 CTC students in week 5 of fall 2025.

Since 1 July 2025 the former Interior Alaska Campus has been part of CTC. The college now also serves the Tok area and the McGrath/GASH, Nenana, Yukon Flats and Yukon-Koyukuk regions, mostly through distance delivery.

Programs, and which Fairbanks site teaches them

Many programs are offered at more than one level: an AAS of about 60 credits, a one-year certificate of about 30 credits, and a shorter occupational endorsement. All CTC courses are charged the same per-credit tuition (see the cost section), except that aviation courses carry a surcharge.

Short endorsements are the only awards left in some fields: Drafting Technology is an 18-credit endorsement (the certificate is suspended), and Basic Carpentry (14.5 credits) and Facility Maintenance (18 credits) are endorsements too. Phlebotomy is one 5-credit course (HLTH F255) with a 100-hour externship that prepares students for the ASCP exam, not a credential.

Two Fairbanks health programs are not CTC’s own. The BSN, with a Fairbanks cohort of 24 each fall, is awarded by the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), and the Radiologic Technology AAS is a UAA degree taught in Fairbanks in cooperation with CTC and Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. UAA reports an 87% average first-time ARRT pass rate for its radiologic technology graduates, 2020-2025.

What the main programs cover

Practical Nursing (LPN)

The certificate is 35 credits, taught downtown as a full-time cohort that runs fall, spring and summer. The first cohort completed 320 clinical hours. Applicants submit an application, hold AHA CPR and First Aid, pass a background check and sit an interview, and seats are limited. The program holds initial accreditation from ACEN, with its next visit due in fall 2029, and has provisional approval from the Alaska Board of Nursing, which asked for reports every six months. Graduates sit the NCLEX-PN; the program’s own target is 80% passing on the first attempt.

Aviation Maintenance

Students choose the Airframe, Powerplant or combined Airframe & Powerplant certificate (40 to 60 credits) or the 75-credit AAS, all taught at the hangar on the East Ramp of Fairbanks International Airport. The catalog says students can complete the requirements for the FAA mechanic’s certificate in as little as one year. Classes start in late August, and entry includes a faculty interview. Aviation courses carry a 25% tuition surcharge. The Professional Piloting AAS in the same department is ground school only; students arrange manned flight training with an outside school.

Paramedicine

The 69-credit AAS is accredited by CAAHEP on the recommendation of CoAEMSP and taught at the University Park Building. Students need EMT prerequisites before they start. Beyond coursework, the program includes clinical rotations and a 12-credit summer internship on an advanced life support ambulance. Graduates take the national paramedic exam and then apply for a licence from the Alaska State Medical Board. Students who want a shorter route can take the 18-credit Advanced EMT endorsement, which leads to the National Registry AEMT exam.

Law Enforcement Academy

The academy is a 19-credit occupational endorsement taught as one semester at about 40 hours a week, so it is a full-time commitment. It is certified by the Alaska Police Standards Council under 13 AAC 85.050, and its courses can be taken only as the complete academy package, not one at a time. Applicants must be at least 21 and meet the council’s qualifications. Training is at the University Park Building, which also houses the Fire Science and Paramedicine programs.

Medical Assistant

The 36-credit certificate is the CAAHEP-accredited award, granted on MAERB’s recommendation; a 60-credit AAS is also offered, and a 17-credit Medical Assisting endorsement is the shortest option. All are taught at the Downtown Center. Students complete two practicums, MA F267 at 100 hours and MA F268 at 180 hours. The same downtown site teaches Dental Assistant, Nurse Aide and the billing and coding programs.

Welding & Materials Technology

Welding is taught at the Hutchison Institute of Technology through one credential, the 24-credit Entry-level Welding occupational endorsement. The catalog ties the endorsement to four welding-process certificates and AWS SENSE Entry-Level I. The minimum age is 16. CTC lists no longer welding award, so students who want a full degree in welding will not find one here, though the Diesel/Heavy Equipment and Automotive programs in the same building are one-year certificates.

Tuition and how students pay

The UAF catalog sets 2026-27 rates per credit. CTC courses numbered F100 to F299 cost less than undergraduate courses on UAF’s Troth Yeddha’ campus, which are $310 per credit for residents.

2026-27 Amount
Tuition, CTC courses (F100-F299), Alaska resident $251 per credit
Tuition, nonresident $875 per credit
Tuition, Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) $377 per credit
Consolidated fee (mandatory) $56 per credit
UA Infrastructure Fee $25 per credit
Bookstore Bundle Fee (students can opt out) $21.50 per credit
Aviation surcharge 25% of tuition ($62 per credit), not covered by waivers
Matriculation fee (new degree-seeking students, once) $225
Parking $129 a semester or $222 a year

At the resident rate, 30 credits of CTC courses come to $7,530 in tuition plus $2,430 in consolidated and infrastructure fees, about $9,960 before books, course fees and any aviation surcharge. Nonresident tuition for the same load is $26,250. Alaska has no in-district rate. On 5 August 2026 the University of Alaska Board of Regents voted 10-0 to end the nonresident surcharge at UAA, UAF and UAS from fall 2027, when nonresidents would pay the resident rate; 2026-27 rates are not affected. The vote was reported by Alaska’s News Source.

Federal student aid comes through UAF. Military Student Support has offices on Fort Wainwright and Eielson AFB.

Entry steps differ by program

Several programs have their own entry steps. Practical Nursing needs an application, CPR and First Aid, a background check and an interview. Aviation Maintenance needs a faculty interview and starts in late August. The Law Enforcement Academy requires applicants to be 21 or older and meet Alaska Police Standards Council qualifications. Paramedicine needs EMT prerequisites. Welding and Basic Carpentry set a minimum age of 16. UAA’s Radiologic Technology program is competitive, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Schedules follow the program: Practical Nursing is a full-time cohort from fall to summer, the academy runs about 40 hours a week for one semester, and the business, accounting and early childhood programs are online.

Accreditation and results

CTC is accredited through UAF by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, which first accredited UAF in 1934. NWCCU lists UAF as accredited with no sanctions; its most recent review was a Fall 2026 Policies, Regulations and Financial Review, and the next is a Fall 2027 Evaluation of Institutional Effectiveness. Programmatic accreditation: CAAHEP for Medical Assistant and Paramedicine, American Bar Association approval for Paralegal Studies, initial ACEN accreditation for Practical Nursing, which also has provisional Alaska Board of Nursing approval, and Alaska Police Standards Council certification for the Law Enforcement Academy.

We found no published CTC-wide completion or job-placement rate and no published NCLEX-PN pass rate for the Practical Nursing program.

Before you enroll

  • CTC’s nursing credential is the LPN certificate. There is no RN program at CTC; the Fairbanks BSN is a UAA degree with 24 seats each fall, and Radiologic Technology is also UAA’s.
  • The catalog says the A&P certificates prepare students for the FAA mechanic certificate but does not say whether the school holds FAA Part 147 certification, so ask the department. Aviation courses also cost 25% more in tuition, and waivers do not cover the surcharge.
  • Professional Piloting is ground school only. UAF gives flight instruction for unmanned aircraft only, so manned flight training is arranged and paid for separately.
  • Some fields offer only a short award: welding is a 24-credit endorsement and drafting an 18-credit endorsement. Several medical office, scribe and billing credentials are closed to new students.
  • Nonresidents pay $875 per credit in 2026-27, more than three times the resident rate. The Regents’ vote to drop the surcharge takes effect only from fall 2027.
