Wentworth: a Boston technology university with an evening electrician program
Wentworth Institute of Technology is a private, nonprofit university in Boston’s Fenway section, founded in 1904 through a merchant’s bequest, with classes from 1911. Most of its 4,424 students (fall 2025) are in four-year bachelor’s degrees with required co-op work terms, but its Workforce Development and Professional Education division also serves working adults. Its main trade credential is the 600-hour Journeyman Electrician certificate, taught on two evenings a week by an approved education provider of the Massachusetts electricians’ board. Alongside it are a live online prep course for the Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License, an online non-credit project management certificate, an online associate degree in engineering technology for apprentices and an online project management bachelor’s. The day degrees include ACCE-accredited construction management, a NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture and CIDA-accredited interior design.

The table starts with the practical, career-entry offerings and then lists the degrees closest to the trades. The 2026-27 catalog has one associate major, 26 bachelor’s majors, 13 master’s programs and six undergraduate professional certificates, plus non-credit courses.

Wentworth’s day degrees also include ABET-accredited engineering programs, among them electrical, civil, mechanical and computer engineering, and ABET-accredited computer science. These are four-year academic degrees, not trade training. The Computer Networking BS no longer admits students, and three professional certificates, in facilities management, managing construction projects and project management, are closed to new applicants.
What the main programs cover
Journeyman Electrician
The program is four courses, Journeyman Electrician 1 to 4, of 150 classroom hours each, taken in order. Classes meet in person on the Boston campus from 5 to 10 pm on Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, with starts in May, September and January. Students who finished earlier levels at another licensed provider can join at level 2, 3 or 4. The certificate covers the 600 classroom hours only; apprentices must log their 8,000 hours of on-the-job work separately, and some employers pay for the courses.
Construction Supervisor License Exam Preparation
The course runs for seven Wednesday evenings, 5:30 to 8:30 pm Eastern, live over Zoom, about 21 hours in all, and prepares students for the Massachusetts Unrestricted Construction Supervisor License exam, which is given by Prometric for the state. The code-book package is bought separately, and an optional in-person book-building night is held on campus. Students earn a Certificate of Completion. Sections start on 20 January, 24 March and 26 May 2027.
Engineering Technology associate degree (online)
This 60-credit online degree is built for people already in an approved apprenticeship: up to 24 credits come from the apprenticeship and 36 are academic. Approved programs include Wentworth’s own Journeyman Electrician program, IBEW Local 103, ABC Massachusetts (Gould Construction Institute), NEIEP for elevator mechanics and Wayne J. Griffin Electric. Courses such as Circuits Theory and Electronic Devices, Logic Circuits and Microcontrollers and Embedded Communication are taken part-time over five semesters, either asynchronously or on one or two evenings a week, in a fall cohort.
Project Management (online)
The non-credit Professional Certificate in Project Management is three self-paced online workshops of 35 hours each, with up to ten weeks per workshop and enrollment at any time, and it is aimed at the built environment; it ends with a digital credential and 10.5 CEUs. The credit route is the 127-credit online BS in Project Management: part-time and asynchronous, accepting up to 54-63 transfer credits, 50 military credits or 27 apprenticeship credits, so prior college, military or apprenticeship study can count toward the degree.
Construction Management
The BS is a four-year day degree in Boston with co-op work terms and concentrations in Infrastructure or Real Estate & Facilities Management. Two credit certificates sit alongside it. Foundations in Construction Management (12 credits) covers an introduction to construction management, facilities and real estate, building construction, building information modelling and heavy construction equipment. Applied Construction Management (14 credits) adds plan reading and specifications, estimating, building systems and scheduling. The Construction Management MS can be taken on campus or online.
Tuition and fees for 2026-27
For 2026-27, full-time undergraduate tuition is $46,030, up from $44,260 in 2025-26, and the service fee adds $1,400, for a total of $47,430, per Wentworth’s tuition and costs page. As a private university, Wentworth charges every student the same rate whatever their state; the rates differ only by enrollment status and program.

The tuition page gives $658 per credit for the online Project Management BS and Engineering Technology degree in 2026-27, while the Engineering Technology program page still shows an older $595 rate, so confirm the rate when you apply. The catalog lists a lower $595 per-credit rate for degree-seeking part-time students, so confirm which applies. Wentworth estimates average housing at $16,170 and a residential food plan at $5,126 to $7,040 a year. Electrician books cost about $800 for the first course and less for later ones.
Degree students can use federal student aid. The average net price after grants was $35,604 in 2023-24, according to College Navigator. Non-credit Professional Education courses, including the electrician program, are priced per course.
Admissions and schedule
Federal data put the acceptance rate for first-year applicants at 91% (fall 2024). The application fee is $50, and new undergraduates pay a $500 enrollment deposit. Day degrees are taught in person on the Boston campus, with required co-op terms. Evening and online study is limited to Professional Education courses, the online Project Management BS, the online Engineering Technology degree and several online master’s programs. The Engineering Technology degree admits a fall cohort, and the electrician program starts in May, September and January.
Accreditation and results
Wentworth has been accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education since 1967. NECHE continued its accreditation in March 2023, and the next full evaluation is in fall 2031, per NECHE.
Programmatic accreditors, as Wentworth’s catalog lists them, are ACCE for construction management, NAAB for the M.Arch, CIDA for interior design, NASAD for industrial design and ABET for engineering, computer science and computer networking degrees.

The career figures come from Wentworth’s Class of 2025 career outcomes, which cover bachelor’s and master’s graduates up to six months after graduation; graduation and retention come from its 2025-26 Common Data Set and College Navigator. Wentworth’s consumer information publishes no licensure exam pass rates, including for the electrician course.
Before you enroll
- The Journeyman Electrician certificate covers the classroom hours only. The 8,000 hours of on-the-job work required for the licence are separate.
- The construction supervisor course and the electrician program are built around Massachusetts licences. They are less useful if you plan to work in another state.
- The online Engineering Technology degree is only for people in one of the apprenticeships Wentworth has approved, such as IBEW Local 103 or Wentworth’s own electrician program.
- Day degrees cost $47,430 a year in tuition and fees before housing; the federal average net price was $35,604 in 2023-24.
- Some programs on older lists are closed to new students: the Computer Networking BS (replaced by Information Technology) and the Facilities Management, Managing Construction Projects and Project Management professional certificates.
The Boston campus
All in-person teaching happens on Wentworth’s 31-acre campus at 550 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115. The electrician courses meet there in the evening; day students can also take classes at nearby colleges through the Colleges of the Fenway. Online programs are delivery options, not separate campuses, and co-op placements are at employers’ sites.
Co-ops and career help
Co-op work terms are required in the day degrees; the Computer Information Systems BS, for example, includes two. For the Class of 2025, construction management BS graduates reported a $77,000 median salary and electrical engineering BS graduates $77,500, according to the same career outcomes report.

On Niche, Wentworth Institute of Technology is rated 3.62 out of 5 from 1,175 reviews, with an overall grade of C+ (checked October 2026). Reviewers most often praise hands-on, major-focused academics with labs and a makerspace, approachable faculty and a friendly community, and clubs, networking events, job fairs and résumé help. Common complaints are career fairs that suit some majors better than others, limited diversity and few events for international students, and event times that are hard for commuters. The reviews cover the whole university, and we could not tell whether they were invited by the school or posted in bursts.
